Well gents (I use that term lightly...LOL) I've gone and done it and hit the retirement button and will transition next summer at 25+ years in my beloved USAF as an aircraft maintenance officer. House and family already settled in Athens area so that's the spot. Now its up to me to land a good 2d career in/around Athens so I can afford the wrecking my wallet's about to take as the first of my two oldest graduates this year and second one right after that. Any insight as to where to start looking? I'm thinking it would be awesome to work with The Bulldog Club to work keeping money coming into UGA or get into the athletic department helping out there. Otherwise, I'm hearing pharmaceutical industry is growing in the area (Social Circle?), the film industry is exploding (Atlanta), I also need to look into the local aviation/aerospace industries like McCann or look into Caterpillar or starting a franchise of some sort. Anyone give me a vector (I know that's a loaded question on this board)?

Have you considered aircraft maintenance at a mid-size airport with a sizable amount of private and corporate traffic? Buddy of mine does that in Arky. He has a business with 5-6 mechanics and there are a couple of corporations based at the airport where he has a shop.

I don't the industry but would have assumed that an aircraft mechanic with the right certifications and military experience could write their own ticket. Am I wrong?

Romeo & Juliet is a beautiful song and I don't care who hears me say that.

Mark Knofler and Emmylou Harris version is the best.

Actually, that whole Knofler Emmylou live album is righteous...

Ashamed to say I haven't heard that version. Her accompaniment improves nearly anything.

So, you're just going to wheel into town and create a franchisable business "of some sort"?

Ive got a question.

In this Dire Straits video, he plays both Les Paul and Strat.

Knopfler's signature guitar is a strat.

Why the Les Paul in this video?

Is it part of the message of the song? Money for nothing?

We got to move these color TVs.....

I remember Casey Casum telling me on the FM radio as a kid, that there is no message. That knofler went to buy a tv at Sears and overheard this conversation word for word by the salesman watching mtv on the display units..

The Sears salesman wasn't incorrect.

If it was me, I'd go to Columbia and work for one of the Cartels. Lots of coke and whores there. It's what you worked so hard to earn. You deserve it!

WOW...didn't take long for this thread to go off the rails (not shocked). Part of why I read the GSB--the AADD run amok is hilarious sometimes.

No, look at franchises like Smashburger for example not create one from scratch. And to answer your question--sure, why not? Can't win the race unless you run it.

Thanks...not exactly your "typical" government employee though. Been running large operations and executing complex programs/plans for quite some time at a pretty high level. I'm not a wrench turning mechanic, I'm responsible for the wrench turning mechanics and fleet health of several types of combat aircraft where ever I've been.

Ultimately would love to do something supporting the Dawgs though.

I'm sure Tech Ops at Delta would love to have you.

The AD has its own facilities staff. The guy that used to run that show was a decorated USAF fighter driver.

I think you're correct in that an experienced A&P mechanic "shouldn't" have a difficult time finding employment in GA. I'm not a mechanic though, I'm on the executive side. Think of me as a CEO/COO of an industrial business with 500-1000+ employees and close to $1B in assets and a $10M budget.

But tired of being away from the family so much. Ready for something new and to be able to see UGA football in person and not at 2AM.

I have and will be spreading resumes around after Christmas. Wouldn't mind trying something new though.
