I honestly don't know...but it would be interesting.

And even if we do finish lower...what does that mean? Why do teams get ranked high? Usually because they have a reputation for doing well, right? I mean, it is looking like Alabama was not the best team in the nation, but they still started off ranked #1. And who knows...maybe they ARE the best team in the nation, and just blew it. So, are we so different? Last year we could have won a National Championship, and without injuries would be in the hunt this year. how many teams would love to be in our position, and yet we sit around and whine and want to fire everybody.

Pre-season rankings are for wannabes. Look at Arkansas last season. Auburn last year. USCw. We can go on and on.

Do you really think Louisville and Fresno State are among the best teams in the nation? And yet, they were ranked that way at one point this season.

Should be an interesting off season. Georgia sucked it up this year and the optimism reigns supreme.

We return a dc that is average and will unlikely make any changes to the approach of how special teams are coached, but we should field a pretty good team next year.

I think some of the optimism comes from the fact that we should be able to score enough to win any game on the schedule next year, should we stay healthy.

Let's face it guys, this season was cursed. We started w/ a tough loss and then rebounded with two great wins against top 10 teams (something many on this board thought we'd never do again ) and just when we were starting to hit our stride- BOOM. Injuries everywhere. We had already lost our best wr, then our two starting RB's and 2/3 receivers go down. Add in the miracle 4th down play against Auburn and the Aaron Murray injury and this season was cursed. It also didn't help that our defense blew donkey dick.

True. but honestly. had we stayed relatively healthy, what do you think our record would be? And let's face it...Auburn was just plain lucky with the pass.

Again, true. but the defense is returning intact....along with the offense. With even a slightly improved Defense becuase of experience and a relatively healthy team, where do you think we could finish? There are NO guarantees. Just because you have a great roster does not ensure a national championship. Just ask LSU, Alabama, USC, Texas.....and on and on and on.

And recruiting. Thats where we seem to fall short of expectations every year.

While I agree, I get the general impression that our fans think we recruit better than reality. Someone on the SECrant had a link to some data that basically shows that BCS Champions and contenders mostly have top 5 recruiting classes in the years leading up to their contention. LINK Alabama is a perfect example. We usually have top 10 recruiting classes but clearly that talent gap between top 10 and top 5 is significant.

I see this a lot, but I am not so sure. High School football players are SO hard to gauge. Who is to say this kid is a 5* and this kid is a 3*?

And, even if a kid IS more talented, that does not mean he is going to work hard to make himself better.

Things have changed over the years. When I played, NOBODY quit playing football. You got a job in the summer and you worked out after work. Or you went to your girlfriends house AFTER you worked out for football.

Now, I hear about kids quitting to work and make money, or quitting because their girlfriend wants them to spend time with them. Something small can change a kids attitude and work ethic to the point he doesn't develop as expected.

Exactly. recruiting. And, I realize, as a whole they are fairly accurate with their projections of a kid, but how many times does a kid not develop like somebody thought? I mean, players ranked #1 in the nation falling flat. Jeff Driskell, anyone?

Recruiting rankings really don't mean as much as we like them to mean. It's fun to follow in the off-season, but it's not unusual for a 3* to make a BIG impact and a 5* to fall flat.

I wouldn't. Oh, and Tennessee ought to be doing pretty darn good, too.

All of this is true and Missouri is a good example of a team that has overachieved with lower ranked talent but then Missouri will likely not play for the NC this season either. Yes, recruiting evaluations are not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but clearly the data shows if you consistently have top 5 recruiting classes over the last 4 years, you have a much better chance of winning a NC. And anyone that thinks Alabama is in decline due to one improbable play by Auburn is fooling themselves. Alabama had that #1 recruiting class last season and has the #1 recruiting class so far this season.....

I'm no Disney but you're an idiot.

2012 6-5
2011 19-18
2010 23-UR
2009 13-UR
2008 1-13
2007 13-2
2006 15-23
2005 13-10
2004 4-7
2003 9-7
2002 12-3
2001 UR-22

Those are AP pre and post season rankings during Richt's tenure. We've had higher post season rankings than preseason rankings more than half the time which isn't bad. We definately underachieve but this was a retarded way to point it out considering last year and the year before we finished higher than we started.

What does Top 10 nationally get you??? Usually 4th or 5th in the SEC...

Bama, UF, LSU almost always out recruits UGA. UGA & AU usually fight it out for 4th in the conference.

Kinda sucks to finish with an 8.4 National average in recruiting over a 10 year period but finish avg'ing 4th in our conf...

Just shows you how thin the margin for error in the SEC is. If you don't bring your best game & come out firing on all cylinders Labor Day weekend your gonna lose 2-3 games every year, just because of the quality of competition top to bottom. Other than UK there's not a team in the SEC that couldn't beat us this year on a good day. Also there's not a team in the SEC that we couldn't beat this year on a day we were playing well...

If we were in the ACC/BIG/Big12/Pac12 the last 13 years we'd been to at least 2 BCSCG with our talent no matter how you feel about our staff...

Honestly man I try to not to speculate too much. Maybe we would've won. Maybe not. The kid in me wants to believe that is the case, but the pessimist whose nightly blood lust has spilled over into my days looks at our track record and says that we would've probably lost a few regardless. I just don't see anything to be optimistic about next year. I fear my mask of sanity is about to slip.
