New OC will want his own OL coach for sure, possibly receivers too. I can't think that there'd be any better candidates out there for RB and TE than BMac and Lilly, so I'd imagine UGA will try to keep them in Athens.

In one series I would watch the sooners run the read option from the gun, go under center and run off tackle, and then run a PA off the jet sweep from the pistols.

What made them so unstoppable is they could do all that without huddling or changing personnel, so the defense was stuck with whatever shitty matchups they had on the field unless they called timeout. That team set the record for TDs in a season with 99. They beat #2 TT 65-21 when Stoops called off the dogs in the third quarter....they could have hit 100 that night.

Line up in a dime defense? Here comes DeMarco Murray for 7 straight runs off tackle. Line up in a big defense? Here comes six straight slants from Bradford to Jermaine Gresham.

I think it all sets up well. Ball, IMO, has always been a band aid coach and is replaceable. Will UGA shoot to keep him? Probably. But I don't think it'd be a loss we couldn't get over like the other 2. Friends leaving so that works.

Sanford, for your question on handcuffing the new guy. Well, that seems like something we'd do but it depends on what we hear of the search. We go after a big name I can't imagine they can hire him and require that. We go cheap or within our staff then I bet we do make his staff decisions for him

BMac is such a great recruiter and with the success we've had at running back I really hope we keep him, same with Lilly. I would like to see us throw some wrinkles into the offense with whatever coordinator we hire, but we just had a record breaking season scoring wise so we don't need to change too much.

I think my biggest fear with the new hire is handing him Richt's 1990s playbook and saying "here ya go, call what you want as long as it's in here". That's essentially what we did with Bobo, but ultimately it "worked", I guess. I mean it's clear this is still Richt's same offense from his first season in 2001, just with maybe a few different looks thrown in.

I'm curious if the new guy will be forced to work within the confines of our previously established playbook or if we'll hand him the keys and let him loose.

I think that 2008 was unit was offense at its apex. UF stopped them, yea, but not on a system. That was an nfl defense that stopped OU. And OU still competed.

I won't pretend we have the horses to do what OU did right away but I won't suggest we couldn't one day or be effective now. OU was always effective and now under heupel they're atrocious. Their fans line for Wilson. And look at IU. Their defense has been appalling but their offense has always been on point when they don't turn it over. They beat Mizzou, they've scared the B1G blue bloods, and so on. I think hell fail as a HC but Wilson will make some programs offense unstoppable.

I just want a Wilson clone

The more hands off richt is the better. Let these guys do there thing. Unless we hire a mini Malzahn and his offense is getting our defense killed with TOP I want mark to be the CEO coach he claims to be. I feel like bobo has kind of adjusted richts offense but I'm with ya on him adopting richts old shite. Maybe that's why the pistol disappeared. Richt got antsy

B Mac ain't going anywhere nor is Lilly. IDGAF who they bring in.

Those are Richt's boys and are way too important for recruiting to even suggest it.

To this day, I believe OU would have beat the shite out of UF if they didn't have the month long layoff and their offense was still sharp. I don't buy that theory for 2009 Texas or 2010 Oregon, but I wholeheartedly believe that to be the case with 2008 OU. No one can or will ever convince me otherwise.

I think the post you were responding to was going under the assumption that Friend leaves for CSU.

That, and you really want your OC and OL coach to be on the same page in philosophy and terminology with all the calls, checks, adjustments, etc. Moreso than any other position coach on offense.

Not dissimilar to Pruitt wanting Sherrer as his right hand man and eyes in the sky last year.

Crow,

You think we go out and make a hire or hire from within?

I'd say within, purely based on Richt running this offense for so long. Does he really go out and hire a guy that would change the scheme, verbage, and probably want his own staff? That seems very unlikely to me, but I was wrong once.

The only way we promote from within is if we whiff on like our top 6 targets or something.

I would be disappointed with a full blown spread offense. It definitely works but I also think it's hard to keep consistent year in and year out due to the need to recruit the right type of players. However high school's across the country are almost all running a spread so maybe I'm just too old school and can't accept change.

Ideally for me we keep pro-style with added spread elements that has been mentioned before. Ultimately I think a well balanced pro-style offense is still the hardest to defend in the SEC with the speed we go against every week. and yea, we need Jacob Eason too.

That makes more sense. I was under the impression the post was saying the new OC would replace Friend.

Pro style all the way. We want to continue to get NFL players. The high school offenses like the spread and triple option have their years, but the best recruits will not flock to those offenses consistently because it isn't used in the NFL.

Outside of this year I really don't want to crown Friend. They were excellent at run blocking, absolutely, but they left a lot to be desired in pass pro. And he hasn't been a world beater on the recruiting trail. I remember I wasn't the only guy doubting him until he brought Pruitt in.

I'm ok with losing Friend but the OL hire is absolutely huge.

Someone might have said it already but...
What about BMac to OC (Under Richt's tutorship) and hire Thomas Brown as new RB coach?
