Anybody know if South Bend is worth a damn on Friday night? Right now our plan is flying to Chicago on Wednesday and leaving Monday. I like to see how the other half lives and would like to party in South Bend on Friday night but it might be too much of a pain in the arse.

Northern Indiana ain't exactly the redneck riviera or las vegas..it would be a great place to live and work but as far as "vacationing" not so much...there is a bar on every corner but they are neighborhood "pubs" more than bars...very friendly places and most of them have unbelievably good food BUUUUUTTTTTT they aren't the kind of places you go to and drink a quart of Jack Daniels and start barking and getting naked....South Bend has typical college bars and I would imagine they can get pretty rowdy but it ain't like Athens....more blue collar and more adult like....again, not horrible but not a typical college town like we are accustomed to in the SEC....

Like compared to Athens sucks or compared to Starkville sucks?

No comparison between either....sucks hard compared to Athens but much better than Starkville as far as nice restaurants and nice "lounges" but not a typical college town...

Both....Gary isn't that great either. Chicago is by far your best bet and will make the most of your trip if you're going.

I wouldn't even stop for gas in Gary...unless it has changed dramatically Gary is worse than any neighborhood I have ever been in in Atlanta and I grew up less than 5 miles from the bluff and have family in East Point, Cabbage Town and College and Forest Park.

I worked in Gary for 4 months one time....seriously walked from the hotel to the truck and from the truck to the hotel with pistol in hand....not holstered, not stuck in my pants but in my hand....

There is some truly good public land duck hunting in Indiana that is completely doable as a visitor...if anyone is bent that way...

Booked hotel in chicago for thursday and friday. I'm sold on either getting an air BNB near campus for Saturday after the game, or looking at a cheap hotel a little west down the road on the way back towards chicago.

Now all that's left is rental car! I gave up on the bus or train idea.

Another option for those who hate big cities and don't want to deal with Chicago is to get a beach house on Lake Michigan near Grand Rapids.

Any reason you gave up on the bus idea?

not a bad idea. I see some beach front house that sleep 10 for $1000 total for 2 nights.

Few reasons, and I'm typing on phone which I hate so pardon the errors.

It's not a UGA bus like I originally thought (mentioned in OP) but an every Saturday MD bus, so that kinda sucks. More importantly id be on someone else's schedule which I don't like. They arrive on campus 4 hours prior to kickoff, so.if it's a night game I'm just sitting around Chicago all day which would make me antsy as hell. It doesn't leave back until an hour after the game..When the game is over I wanna gtfo of there.

I just found it preferable to rent a car (there's a big group of us so cost is minimal) and do our own thing
