Give him a chance. I think this is a good hire.

You have to understand. Most of the posters who immediately labelled this a bust would have said the same things no matter who was hired. Anyone who has to be convinced to at least give this guy the benefit of the doubt already had their mind made up long ago.

Haven't seen anyone label him a bust. Every candidate had pluses and minuses. His is the lack of college football experience. And that can be a significant issue. Unfortunately it is not rare that NFL coaching experience does not translate well into the college game. Please see Grantham, Todd.

That is the point and the only point. Maybe he will work out, but to say that is no hill to climb is naive

Well, Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier sucked in the NFL too, and they're roundly acknowledged as college coaching gods.

Sort of like comparing NASCAR to Formula One. College and pros require different skills. You can be very good at one and totally inept at the other.

I agree with you. There really wasn't anyone available (as fas as I'm aware of) that would have made 85% of the fans happy. Am I thrilled with this hire, not exactly. However, I don't know who else is out there that I would really like. There were way more good DCs available this year than OCs.

This is the Dawgrant. Of course there was an immediate negative reaction from some of the usual suspects that can be expected to disapprove of just about anything that happens at UGA. This is just a sampling. But you're right, nobody used the word "bust".

While I will agree that NFL experience is not a guarantee of college success, 9 years as a coordinator and about that many more as various position coaches is a pretty good resume. CBS hasn't been around that long because he sucks or because of his dad. Grantham didn't last long as an NFL coordinator, and he was far from our first choice as DC.

I said I didn't like the hire. Never said he would be a bust. In fact I said I'll just have to take the wait and see approach.

That is not a bad thing. But he has what would be best guaged as an average NFL resume. And that gets back to your point that coaches in the NFL are all superior coaches, and an "average" coach in the NFL only looks average due to the level of competition. And that has some merit.

Likewise, no college coaching experience as a major concern also has merit and that is the rub. Maybe he will be like a fish in the collegiate water, maybe not, we'll see. But it is a concern.

That Schotty (can I call him that) was the 1st choice as Grantham wasn't means nil. I have you 1/4 Willie who was the first choice to replace BVG.

I'm on the fence. I'm going to reserve judgement until I see our football team later this year.

I don't really have any concerns about his lack of experience in college, at least not from a gameday perspective. He knows how to analyze a defense, look for vulnerabilities. I'd be willing to bet he knows more schemes and formations and techniques than any single individual on our offensive staff during Richt's tenure, including CMR. He knows how to research an opponent, because NFL teams are far and away more advanced at doing so. He knows how to call a game and manage the clock, after doing it for nine years of 16 game seasons. He's coached wide receivers, tight ends, quarterbacks at various times during his career. And he knows all of this from a different perspective than CMR and CMB, having done it on various teams in the NFL, so he brings a lot to the table. Sure, there's a difficult process to integrate all of that with our existing offense and personnel, but that would be the case with any new hire, college or pro.

Recruiting doesn't concern me. Our staff has good recruiters and they'll show him the ropes. It's mostly personality, learning the HS coaches, talking to young kids and their parents. Schottenheimer is by all accounts a gregarious guy and has been in the business for a long time. I think his league experience, contacts, and communication skills will serve him very well as a recruiter.

Biggest issues are two. First, learning to work with the rest of our offensive staff. My hope is they're as willing to learn from Schottenheimer as he is from them. If Pruitt is smart, even he can learn a few things. Second, teaching kids who are at an earlier stage in their development. We'll have to wait and see if he's better at that than Grantham, who was clearly unable to do it.

The college environment is a lot different than the pros. His minimal college experience is a concern. Many coaches do well on one level but cannot transit to the other. Not uncommon at all.

Glad you are confident. For me, I don't know how he'll do.
