I thought this was a pretty important point. Numbers in parentheses are his offensive rankings by yards that year.

QB Coach

2001: Tony Banks, Jeff George
2002-2005: Drew Brees (will use in recruiting), Doug Flutie, and Phillip Rivers as back up (will use in recruiting)

OC - Jets

2006: Chad Pennington (25)
2007: Chad Pennington/Kellen Clemens (26)
2008: Brett Favre (16)
2009: Mark Sanchez/Kellen Clemens (AFC Championship Game) (20)
2010-11: Mark Sanchez (AFC Championship game) (11)

OC - Rams

2012: Sam Bradford (23)
2013: Kellen Clemens/Sam Bradford (30)
2014: Shaun Hill/Austin Davis (28)

It's amazing that we hire a guy who was an NFL coordinator for 8 or 9 years at two teams and people here act like he doesn't have a clue. This guy knows more about offense than all our other candidates put together or he would never have lasted more than a couple of seasons in the league, much less been hired by a second team. It remains to be seen how that turns out at UGA, but not a big surprise that the Mark Richt/UGA haters wasted no time in calling him a bust.

Agree completely. Seems like people expected us to go out and hire Chip Kelly or Bill Belichick to be our OC.

I never said that it was a bad hire. I said that I don't understand what the excitement is about. Can you explain the excitement is about?

Thats the dumbest shite ive ever read. You do know who his dad is right. Think Monte had a small hand in Lane staying gainfully employed for a while?

Nah, I'm well aware. It was a foregone that the only place this hire, no matter who it was, would have been more ridiculed than Dawgrant is Stingtalk, probably by more than a few of the same people posting on both boards.

Lane Kiffin lasted slightly more than one season as an NFL coach, and was summarily fired during the early part of his 2nd season. Bryan Schottenheimer was an NFL coach for over 15+ years, including 9 years as an OC. He was immediately rehired after his first gig as an OC ended. Are you incapable of understanding that distinction? The fact that they both had prominent fathers is the only similarity in their NFL careers.

We got a highly knowledgeable OC, who was paid big bucks for nearly a decade to run NFL offenses, prior to that was an NFL QB coach. I'm really sad that we didn't get an unproven noob who played 2nd fiddle to some college offensive minded head coach who ran the offense himself, or some guy from Western Kentucky.

Well you did get an unproven noob in some regard. It's unknown whether or not he can recruit and the guy has never even broken the top ten in offensive production. That's unlroven to me. Being in the nfl for 10 years doesn't make the guy a homerun hire and it doesn't mean it will translate to college. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Maybe the athletic department will apologize to you for not hiring an OC who runs the air raid, which has never worked consistently in this conference or won any sort of title. But yeah, go ahead and keep telling yourself that's the answer.

See Charlie Weis

And he actually had good offenses in the NFL

New England's offenses got much better when Weis left.

He can coach and he knows what an NFL offensive player looks like. That's a good start.

I guess those guys that paid him big bucks to run their offenses in the NFL couldn't read the stat lines? Or maybe they thought he was doing a pretty good job with what he had. Or maybe, like Chef Leppard suggests, he's a clueless dolt and they just sacrificed their offenses for 9 years as a favor to Marty. The NFL is well known for their charity.

a) I’m a Richt hater, but I like the hire a lot

b) UGA fans are accustomed to being let down. The truth is, no matter who was hired, people would have bitched. It’s the nature of sports, especially for the State of Georgia (I’m looking at every sport, college & professional).

I couldn't begin to tell you why nfl teams hire who they hire other than there is a limited number of nfl level coaches and they get recycled offen, even the not so good ones.

And I'm not ssaying that the guy won't pan out. My only argument is that there's really nothing to get excited about.
