...I thought the whole concept with this set based on what they did in Ark with McFadden was that the guy taking the snap could either hand it off, keep it or drop back and throw. If you direct snap to Sony or Godwin doesn't that make it easier for the defense because now everyone knows it's going to be a run? With somebody taking the snap who can't pass what's the point?

Educate me.

Well, from what I've seen, they are either letting Terry or Sony run it or they hand it off to iMac on the jet sweep to keep the defense honest. Hopefully one game they will let Terry throw it and fool the defense. He has a good arm.

I can see Richt keeping the Terry throw in his back pocket for a big moment that will create a spark. Like if we're down against Tech I bet he uses that.

It's kind of like the Greene/Murray fake. You only get one shot at it for total deception.

McFadden only threw the ball 22 times his entire career at Ark. The most he threw in one season was 11 times, or about 1 per game. I think we have the throwing wrinkle in there, but are waiting to pull it out (not sure why).

Terry Godwin played QB in HS, so there is that option of actually tossing it but Schitty has yet to try it.

Eh. Terry played some QB. Rarely threw. Was just a play maker. But like I said, he can throw if we need him to. His arm just isn't as good as people think.

I used to LOVE this play. Takes a lot of guts for the QB to run that play. It also takes a great fake from the QB and the RB. But I think it worked every time. Seems we would pull it out 2-3 times a year.

We are using it as a different version of the read option. Hand off on the jet sweep or keep and go up the middle. It can be effective if they make the right read.

I honestly think Schotty and Richt are taking the teams best athletes, throwing them in the gun, and saying "frick it, do it live"

That was my take too so why not use Bauta to run that? Granted he's nowhere near as good a runner as Godwin or Sony but he can also step back and hit a receiver (arguably) to give the LBs something else to think about.

I've never been a big fan of the direct snap just because everyone in the stadium knows you're getting ready to run the ball. We've had success against bad defenses but that's not saying much.

I really thought Bauta was going to run that offense. They kinda tried to do it, but our line was getting blown up. It takes a tad longer to develop.

It also looks like having IMac back in the fold really helps this package as you can run the jet/dive/keep or waggle off it. In theory at least... The jet aspect seems to be a nice wrinkle. Too bad they didn't put this offense in in August. I think we would have been better off...

I want to say Stafford almost died running that play against Tennessee.

Generally the purpose is to free up a blocker so you can get a hat on a hat that way the ball carrier has to theoretically beat one defender and it is off the the races if everyone does their job correctly, but now it has evolved into the read option with misdirection and slight of hand.

Do they have any pull or trap wrinkles with it? I haven't noted any, but it seems like it could get blown up doing that... Just curious of other teams do that...

I'm not a Bauta fanboy but after the way this season has unfolded it would've been interesting to see what he could've done with that package as the starter from day 1. I don't see him losing any games we otherwise win....and with more snaps maybe we could've won at TN and put up a better fight against FL. Oh well....

It's also about keeping your eye on the ball. Watch how fast this handoff takes place on the IMAC score. He's already to the outside of the line before anyone knows he has the ball.

edit: surprised imac didn't get a flag for this (spiking the ball) which is why I think CMR was having a talk with him after the play

The play scares me. When we line up in it, the defense knows we are doing one of two things. Unless we add some more options, Ds will be ready for it now that we have used it a few times.

As opposed to a normal play, when the defense knows we will either comically attempt to pass, or run a marginally effective running play.

We seem to get semi-consistent yardage out of that formation. It isn't any worse than anything else we have tried this year, and at least we can't throw interceptions out of it.

McFadden was such a gifted player. I believe he threw 4 TDs out of that formation in 2006.

I've never been a fan of the wildcat unless that threat of a pass is there. The Dolphins broke it out in 2008 at New England and Ronnie Brown threw a few bombs in that game. You're 100% correct though; with no passing threat, it's way too predictable and our line isn't blowing anyone off the ball to make it work consistently.

I disagree... You have 2 run options. That is enough to make a defense have to respect both. Add the jet and you spread them out more. The pass threat is real, even if we have not done it yet. If you run off with the receivers, the Cbs have to respect it every time unless they are on a blitz or in a cover 2 scheme...
