The FA craziness has continued today with the Panthers releasing Steve Smith, the Bengals releasing James Harrison, & Vince Wilfork asking to be released from the Patriots. I hope the Falcons attempt to kick the tires on some of these guys if nothing more than to drive the price up on them.

Geez are is there anymore FAs from KC we can get. We need a good FS and we're set on defense.

Javier Arenas has been signed to a 1 year deal, but former falcon Peria Jerry has resigned.

Just another bit of news, Devin Hester who was in Atlanta before Javier Arenas was signed, is still in Atlanta.

It is starting to look like we will wait till the draft, but safety Chris Clemons is still up for grabs. Also, not including the two recent signings, the Falcons have 13 million in cap space.

Well we can all breathe a sigh of relief!

I mean I get that he's not going to be counted on to be a starter, but I would much rather take a chance on a younger player who has some upside as opposed to a well established bust with absolutely no upside.

Unfrickingbelievable

I don't think it is bad. He will probably take a veteran minimum, and we can see if he will do better in the new 3-4 scheme it is looking like we are going to roll with.

I just don't think he will be a decent DE, again I would much rather chalk him up as a sunk cost and move on to someone else. I'm not saying that he will be atrocious, but I don't like keeping him around when we already know what he is capable of.

Jerry sucks. Sucked in the past, sucks now and will suck in the future.

What a bust. Can't believe it.

@AdamSchefter

Former Bears return specialist Devin Hester agreed to terms on a 3-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons, per ESPN source.

You can only assume that he will be our slot guy next year. Why else would they sign a KOR specialist to a 3 year deal?

I like it. We had terrible field position last year. If he can get us to start from the 35 instead of the 20, we made a good move.

IMO, anything over $1.00 that we give him is money that could go to a player in a position of need

Why did we sign him if we need Hester for better field position. Just doesn't make sense in our current position of terribleness

Here's why. And they also said they would incorporate him into the offense (find ways to get him the ball)

We'll address other needs in the draft. They have addressed a lot already.

This guy can change a game in a hurry.

Javier Arenas was a nickle corner back in KC along with a returner. And maybe we are hoping Hester will teach Arenas his tricks?

But it is looking more like Arenas was for depth.

Arenas is nickel depth behind McClain. McClain is the backup CB to Trufant and Alford. So if any of our CB's goes down now, we have quality depth at every position. Arenas is also a backup return guy if anything happens to Hester. It was a great move to get him on the super cheap like we did.

Jerry was signed for 1 year $750k, nothing guaranteed. He can still be cut and not cost us a thing. He actually had a decent season last year. I think they want to see how he does in the 3-4 before cutting him. Who knows, maybe that's what's been missing for the guy. Maybe rushing from the A or B gap is where the light comes on for him and he blows up. If by preseason game #4 he's proving to still be shite, then we can cut him and it cost us virtually nothing.

Hester is almost exclusively PR/KR and might get a small bit of work from the slot. Short slants and receiver screens at most. But his purpose is mostly on PR's to give Matty a shorter field to work from. Our PR game the past few years has been horrid. Our defense forces punts, but then we do stupid shite like fair catch on the 10 yard line or let the ball bounce through the end zone and Matty has to go 80 yards to score. Hester catches punts and gets to the 30-50 yard line more than most of the PR's in the league. Matty only having to go 50-60 yards rather than 80+ yards every time is going to be huge.

Hester's contract is going to be incentive laden and look more like a 1 year deal than a 3 year deal. But he's going to be worth the money when it's said and done.
