I can remember watching Mark Richt teams and how often we would commit very dumb - very atrocious - very disheartening penalties - Just non-sense penalties that would keep drives going or ruin our own drives. Personal Fouls that would just kill our momentum. This is not a knock on Richt but when you would play good teams you couldn't afford to have any player do something stupid and we would do it all the time.

Today, Brock Bowers was about to lose his mind over some unsavory play by a Tennessee player and the first thing that happened was one of our own lineman removing him from the situation like a leader. I feel like our boneheaded mistakes are so few and far between now and it is awesome to watch.

It was Oscar Delp that dragged him out. Tight End.

Very well said.

The difference between now and then? These days, in a close game I expect us to pull it out. Back then I'd be waiting for whatever random stupidity that would ruin our chances.

Kirby is Georgia's Bear Bryant. So grateful to be here at this time.

It absolutely is, and it's 100% okay to point out that there were chinks in his white knight armor. Richt was a good coach, but he had flaws that people allowed to be masked by his penchant of coating himself in the armor of "god".

Some of us were all but crucified for trying to point them out, and became tired of the "good man" shite slung around by Richt apologists when arguing these very points.

Kirby has chinks in his white knight armor as well. However, I myself am currently blind to them, so forgive me if I ever fall back to the "well, he's a good man" arguments whilst defending him.

But, yes, discipline is definitely not a chink in the armor. Look at Bama last year to see just how important discipline is for a talented team. Oftentimes, the lack of discipline is the only thing that can ever beat them. Kirby should bottle whatever he does, in this regard, and sell it.

Kirby is a great coach no doubt in part due to his experience gained under Nick Saban.
Mark Richt made his philosophy regarding discipline well known. Richt rationalized excessive penalties as a trade-off in motivating his players to play aggressive/wide-open.
I disagreed with this philosophy during Richt's tenure and felt that it was his greatest weakness.
I equate it to parenting to some extent: lack of discipline is the easy way out because it means you don't have to engage in those tough confrontations that instill discipline.
Kirby is quick to engage in those confrontations as teaching opportunities and it shows in the high quality of our teams.

This is really a ridiculous statement. He had flaws and limitations as a football coach but there are few people in this world who are more genuine than Mark Richt.

All day, this. Most people eschew the responsibility of discipline because it is extra work or very uncomfortable for them. You can extrapolate this to any position of authority. Standards must be set and met, and any failure in that system must be viewed as a teachable moment. Eventually, the process becomes mechanical in nature, running on autopilot, and simply needs slight maintenance from time to time.

Discipline = success.

Of course.

Did I say that Richt was not "genuine"? I absolutely believe that he believed everything that came out of his mouth. I also believe that he knew exactly when to wrap that cloak around himself to protect him from criticism of his product on the field.

Dabo does it as well.

If you had your way, Richt would still be wandering the sidelines.

It's amazing that after a beautiful win somebody can shite on a coach that's been gone for 9 years. "Misery" is more befitting than "Cheer"

You are big mad, I see. That's cool.

However, I didn't bring up Mark Richt. The OP did, and I gave my opinion upon the points that he brought up that contrasted Kirby/Richt. That's not "shitting" on Richt. It's an honest observation. Believe me, if I wanted to shite on Richt, I absolutely could, as I did regularly on the old DawgRant.

Put your tampon in, pull your panties up, and try to be a big girl about it.

No, you only brought up your notion that he used his religion as a shield.

You're the one being the whiny bitch here about something far in the rear view mirror, maybe because you're triggered by people of faith??

I've got better things to do so you can have the last word.

Back in the day we'd have more personal foul penalties by the middle of September than we do in an entire season now.

This shite still doesn't seem completely real sometimes.

It’s ok to point that out and interesting that you did so because FSU led the ACC in penalties during the time he was there with Bowden. Just an unfortunate thing that Richt brought here from FSU….being undisciplined….and indeed, Georgia also led the SEC in penalties several times during the CMR era.

That said, he also brought Van Halanger with him from FSU which, I believe, was the best hire that he ever made. The strength and conditioning of those early Richt Dawgs paid immediate dividends for us in those transitional years. I mean, Richt was exactly the right coach for UGA during those early years. He brought in Van Gorder, made some great position coach hires...
