It takes around 25ish seconds (maybe less) to recover after a sack. That's at least 15 seconds that go to waste.
You have to consider more than the time in that situation, if a Freshman gets sacked with under a minute left it may be difficult for him to have the composure to get everything set up quickly and correctly. Also it doesn't hurt to have a TO in your back pocket if we had drove the field quickly, gotten inside the 10 and wanted to discuss what play to run.

Coaches who waste a critical timeout to ponder for awhile are simply stupid. Usually when I see this happen the coach overthinks and makes a bad call.

Watch the end of the Florida St. North Carolina game. Florida State used their timeouts like you are referring and still lost dam near the same way.

Maybe he was saving it to set up a field go....nope, I can't finish it with a straight face.

We drove down the field incredibly quickly. It would have been nicer to have the extra 40 seconds to try and get further down the field. Again, it worked out, but according to statistics it is absolutely the wrong decision.

Don't forget about needing a time out to use in case of a 10 second run off rule. Any penalty could cost you the game without it.

Right... so you're saying we should waste 40 seconds to save us from a 10 second run off. I wasn't a math major, but that doesn't appear to be a smart call.

I know Kirby is learning, and I think he will handle this situation better in the future, and is very fortunate it worked out.

But we shouldn't give him a pass for that egregious error that people would be pissed about if it was our former coach who made that poor decision.
