Effectively? Coaches who don't coach, but who handle administrative and personnel decisions like a coach *would*. But they're not coaches. Because you can only have a HC and 9 staff coaches. It's a creative skirting of the rules that is allowed and practically necessary in the modern NCAA arms race.

Well, at bama, they bring in legit coaches that have extensive experience at all levels of coaching that could easily pass for a postiion coach at a major school, but classify them as "analysts" or "support staff" in order to stay under the NCAA maximum for coaches. I think the max is like 9 or something similar. With as dirty as some schools are (compared to us, at least) it wouldn't be surprising to know that some schools had upwards of 20 legit "coaches" on staff.
