I saw either Rusty or Kipp put out a note just now about Zeus and Gday. Anyone care to give us the skinny?

Said it before, this class is remincent of Mark Richt.

Like everything else said about Richt, repeating false statements doesn't make them true. Here are Richt's class rankings from 2002 -2015 (used Rivals for consistency, since 247 wasn't around for the first half of his tenure).

Mark Richt is, and always has been a good recruiter. Parents liked him and trusted him and they knew he was a fair man AND a good coach. Some of those classes were over rated, as they would be for any other coach over an extended period of time, but Richt's biggest problem was keeping players eligible because UGA and local law enforcement don't look the other way when football players get into trouble. Ask Dantne Demery. And Richt did not condone paying recruits, which is why he frequently got beat out for the mercenary types who were still shopping for bids at the end of the recruiting cycle.

But still he won 10 games a year, a goal which Smart may never reach once. And he consistently recruited well, partly because he knew when it was time to do some actual talent evaluation and take a few lower rated players, of which there are plenty of good ones in Georgia. Right now, it's not clear whether Smart will come anywhere close to Richt's skill as a head coach before he drives this program into the ditch.

My comment was focused on the instate talent committed elsewhere, not the class rankings.

Back to the comment above, any updates from G-Day?

Yeah, we should not be looking the other way in what Demery did. Go root for Baylor or some program like that if you don't care about morality.

Sucks for sure, but just means Pittman has to get one more guy this year or next year and I trust that he will be able to do that.

I'd say under recruiting and not taking care of the offensive line was his biggest issue.

You misinterpreted what I said. I like the way discipline has been handled at UGA. That doesn't change the fact that Richt coached plenty of games without talented players because of it, due to game suspensions and dismissals.

If I wanted to root for teams whose depth and talent benefit from lax law enforcement/discipline and shady recruiting, there are several we play or recruit against every year that are better examples than Baylor. I always took that into account and understood that it helped those teams win conference or national championships that (barely) eluded Richt. Some of our fan base have never figured it out and chalked it up to our former coach's lack of skill. That UGA fan lack of understanding has led to bad choices for the program.

Richt wasn't perfect and I sometimes disagreed with his recruiting choices, including OL. But he also oversaw some of the most successful offenses in UGA history and he was very good at developing quarterbacks.

Plus, some of his recruiting failures, OL and elsewhere, involved highly suspect recruiting by the teams that beat him out. I get the impression that some of our fan base would like UGA under Smart to play that game and I don't agree with that.

I know a few years ago, UGA was ranked 9th for developing NFL lineman out of all schools based on a 15 year sample. Not sure it dropped much in the last few years.

so its OMs fault and not Richts that we had bad OL classes for most of his tenture?

No argument. I loved Richt. I felt it was time for him to go, but I hated to see it. I was a very big Richt booster.

No one is above board. No one competitive, anyway, except for maybe Stanford.

Maybe I'm too hard on Kirby, most here might even say that's an understatement. But Richt did not leave this program in the gutter, despite this board's consensus. Struggling against the worst teams on the schedule is indefensible and recruits are judging Smart, not Richt, for our performance now.

If the team doesn't show dramatic improvement in Smart's second season, he'll need to make some staff changes and hopefully he won't hesitate. Chaney needs some benchmarks for 2017, and if they're not met I'd like to see Kirby go after a top notch OC and maybe quarterback coach to change the image. And despite the good defensive stats last season, there's plenty of room for improvement there too. We didn't face many good offenses last season.

Sorry?
That's just the way I am. I always try to be honest and deal with people with integrity. I like those qualities in my football team, as well. I also realize that very few teams do this, and I am aware that UGA does things that are not exactly by the rules. It still doesn't change the way I feel about it, though.

I was as hard on Kirby during the season as anybody on here. I made quite a few people mad at me. However, I also try to be fair. I will support him and I honestly think he will get the job done. If I see the same mistakes I saw last year, I will criticize him some more, though. I hope we go at least 10-2. I think with the talent we have, and the schedule we have that is reasonable.

Here is where we might disagree. I thought Chaney did what he could with the talent and limitations he had. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Richt left the "cupboard bare" as some said. But we also were not as strong talent wise as we could have been, and then had limitations due to Chubb coming off an injury and Eason being a freshman.

I am one that was not horrified by Chaney. I actually think he did ok.

Maybe it was not in the gutter after we lost some guys to the 2016 NFL draft, but he left the roster in worse shape than he found it in.

It's true, though. We don't know Smart can win 10 games until he does it. I think he will. I also think he will do an excellent job. But, if you are saying he will be as good as Richt based off last year? No. He has a lot to prove. I'm not sure how anybody can say it is trolling to say that Kirby will be as good as Richt based only on what we saw last year.

That's fine. Certainly nothing to be sorry about.

I just don't think it's realistic to expect that while also expecting to cheer for a highly competitive SEC football program.

Sounds like we might be a serious option for Matt Corral. No easy task pulling a big time Cali QB away from USC, but it seems like we have good reason to keep pursuing him.
