fricking Boss Bailey jumped out of the stadium blocking all those kicks.

Also, has anyone with less name recognition has a bigger game that Michael Johnson @ Auburn?

I'll never not be nostalgic about that season. I started really, REALLY understanding things and getting into diehard mode as a youngster growing up in the subpar 90s. I was in high school in 2002 so to experience that coming off of perpetual 8-4s and losing to our rivals was almost unfathomable.

The recent highs are much higher obviously, but I'll always have a special place in my heart for 02.

As a child watching those Herschel led teams, I never thought the Dawgs would not be good.

Then Goff.

I think for dudes my age, 2002 was extremely special. It was a return to form. No more talking about "when we were kids". I'll always be grateful to Richt for bringing back the winning to the University, no matter how I feel about his legacy overall, or how often I called for his termination later in his career.

He was the right dude at the right time, and while Donnan did reverse the losing trend that Goff left behind, 2002 was the true beginning for a new era of UGA football.

For sure. I was born in 1970 and my interest as a fan coincided with those early 80 years. I assumed we would always be at or near the top of the pile and then the Goff years came. I still had hope going into every season that we would suddenly be at the top again but the years just kept passing by. 2002 was special and broke 12-15 years of frustration for those of us who were around for the early 80s.

My senior year at GA, greatest time ever that season. Went to Bama, SECG and spent NY on Bourbon St. for the Sugar bowl

I watched that video last night and then just saw this thread. Creepy stuff.

I loved watching the season recap.

This was also the last season that we wore white cleats. Busted out the blacks at Clemson the next year and have been in black cleats ever since. Georgia is supposed to wear black cleats.

I think it's also the first season that we didn't wear the double colored (shadowed, 3D) numbers on the white jersesys that were a holdover from the 90s.

2002:

DAMN! That's some lext level Georgia football trivia

On another note I think we need to incorporate at least some black into our helmet stripe. Don't have to necessarily go all black, but maybe a black border. Red and white makes pink and we ain't pink.

Nice trip down memory lane.

I've got a framed print of that season signed by Coach Richt.

Having watched this retrospective, some observations:

2002 was definitely not Richt's best team, but may have had the best player leadership of any of his other squads. I was really impressed with the player interviews and the rhetoric used. I'm surprised they Stinchcomb never went into coaching.

The amount of key injuries sustained during the 2002 season could be compared to the amount from this season.

Musa was a fricking beast.

JT Wall is a name that I can't believe that I've forgotten over the years. I was always impressed with his tenacity.

Jim Donnan was an elite recruiter. People talk about Kirby walking into a great situation...Richt had some beasts awaiting his arrival.

The Van Gorder departure really hurt Mark Richt. If it's true that he let Van Gorder walk because of a dispute between Van Gorder and Garner (always rumored), that coupled with the promotion of Willie Martinez (defacto nepotism) fully justifies my goodwill towards Richt eroding after the West Virginia game.
