First off, let me say again how much I appreciate y'all letting me post over here.

Now to the point of the thread.

I've put in for a transfer to San Antonio this October and was wondering if any of you lived there.

I'm Air Force, but the job is at Camp Bullis. Anyone live near there?

TBird is who youre looking for. for all the flack it gets from houston/dallas folk, SA isnt a bad city at all. nice region of texas with plenty of outdoor opportunities to suit you. shitty roads though

I was hoping he would see this.

Going from Boise to San Antonio doesn't appear to be too much of a culture shock either.

I'm in SA all the time. It's a nice city with a lot to do. Good food options, lots of housing options and not very hard to get around.

I cover San Antonio for work and plan on retiring a short distance from there. Best part of Texas in my opinion.

I visit on occasion. Seems to have lost some of its charm over the last decade or so. Moving more towards your standard big city.

Not shocking news, but probably a lot more Hispanic people than wherever you're from.

The have fake dirty water river in the middle of town that people flock to. I'm not sure why.

No major sports teams to follow. No NFL. No MLB. NO major CFB. Really shitty NBA team.

The actual city limits are stupid big. I'm not sure why they're trying to compensate for.

But hey they have sea world, six flags, and the alamo so after a weekend or two there isn't a lot to do.

Born and raised in SA, traveled with work though the 90's all over and been back in SA for about 15 years now. I'm from the opposite end of town from where Camp Bullis is but the commute from anywhere around the area isn't horrible. TBird isn't to far from that area and could probably help more up that way. You'll be on the edge of the Hill Country out that way and going out 10 west from Bullis opens up a lot of places like Boerne, Comfort, Kerrville, Bandera, then shooting across 46 opens up New Bruanfels, Spring Branch, Canyon Lake, ect. Depends on what your looking for, rural setting for family would be more like the smaller towns I mentioned above with the exception of Boerne and New Bruanfels as they've both gotten pretty big, for a younger crowd you'd want to stay closer to SA, I-10 Corridor near Bullis is where UTSA is located with a lot of bars and restaurants. Anything up in that area along 1604 between I-10 and 281 on up into the Hill Country will be the most expensive areas around though, west of 10 toward Sea World prices start dropping. Personally I'm SE of SA about 30 miles, close enough to go to town when we want but far enough out that we can spread out on our 50 acres without the hassle of neighbors, we're about 35 mins from New Bruanfels and spend more time up that area than we do in SA for leisure, have thought about relocating up there now that all our kids have moved out and still may but it's gotten so busy around there on weekends it can be a bit of a pain. Be glad to help if you have specific questions of the area.

Of the three major Texas cities it's the easiest by far to get around in, somehow traffic doesn't get as bad as Houston or Dallas. In that same breath, I'm gonna tell you under no circumstances do you ever want to to try to drive north out of San Antonio along I-35 to Austin. Might be the worst interstate in the country.

Plenty to do in that area alone and you aren't more than 4 hours from either of the other two major cities and if you are into outdoors and hunting then the hill country is even shorter than that.

They also just had two BBQ places listed in the state's top 50 so they've got that going for them too. Don't move here unless you like BBQ, I'm joking....kinda.....

As already stated, there will be more Mexicans than you are probably used to but I wouldn't call that a downside (except for the illegal ones).

That's about all I've got, I hate big cities on principle and will do my absolute best to never live in a town bigger than B/CS where we all went to school on this board (~225K and even that's too big).

If I had to move back to Texas, I'd live somewhere on the western outskirts of SA. Best and most underrated city in the state.

Hope you get it. Love living in SA, as I'm sure you've picked up on

Thanks for your service. Both wife and I are former USAF as well. Tried like hell to get stationed here when we were active duty but no dice. Obviously, the military presence/influence here is substantial.

We live over on the NW side, between Fiesta Texas and Sea World. I work off of Blanco Rd. lot of traffic out our way but I actually don't mind it. Area is growing fast--it's a competitive place to buy a house.

Be prepared to spend copious amounts of hard earned money at The Shops at La Cantera if you're married Best eats in town are places like Alamo Cafe, Tomatillo's, Mama Margie's, and La Pasadita. La Fogata is overrated.

Definitely do a riverboat tour. Downtown us touristy af but not in a bad way

ETA: Oh yeah, and next season, you should check out this old arse Air Force dude who coaches a JV basketball team in a ramshackle, oversized phone booth over off AT&T Center parkway.

They're aight.

It ALL depends on your age and marital status. Whether San Antonio is for you is entirely dependent in the stage of life you're in.

I lived there in my mid 20s and absolutely loathed it. It is NOT geared for single 20-somethings with college degrees looking for single 20-somethings with college degrees. Unless you are poor and like fat Mexican women who have already had 3 kids, and prefer to hang out in crappy suburban retail strip center bars - then it's ideal. I couldn't get over the lack of attractive single educated white women and the fact that there's no real centralized post-college "scene." It's just beige, characterless, sprawling suburbia starting from the edge of downtown stretching for 50 miles in every direction. You will occasionally see an attractive woman who appears like she knowns English, but there's a 100% chance she's already married and moved there with her husband (or came back home from college with him). Hot single females just don't move there post-college. They go to Dallas, Austin and Houston. Period. The day I moved from San An Phony Ho to Austin was the second greatest day of my life behind the birth of my daughter. My life changed for the better INSTANTLY.

Now, that said, being in my mid-30s these days and married with a kid, could I live in San Antonio? Yeah. There's nothing bad about it for families. In fact, there's a lot to be said for it if you are like me and your life now is your kid and coming home to your house. If I moved back there I'd commit to SuburbLife, get a house in the Dominion and live large. I'd probably like it.

It just depends where you are on the Road of Life.

Jesus there are plenty of eligible/attractive females in this town. Think some of y'all take the Chuckster's "big ol' women" shtick as gospel instead of a joke

SA demographic is comparable to Houston and Austin. If you think different, you're lying to yourself. Same type of folks. One of my little brothers is a UTSA student and has very few problems locating quality tail about town.

Back to OP: if you do make it down to the Countdown City, hit me up and we'll break bread

The door to La Casa de Tbird is always open.
