No one questions whether the overused term "special" applies to UCLA sophomore quarterback Josh Rosen as a passer. No one questions his intelligence, vision, physical attributes or cultivated skills. He's a plus-prototype, and his combination of assets has more than a few people already penciling him in as the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL draft.
Consider that a reporter's earnest, "Are my eyes deceiving me?" appeal to Bruins coach Jim Mora is met with an equally earnest, measured response that includes a comparison that might feel hyperbolic.
"The closest I could come to a comparison would be Peyton Manning when Manning was the same age as Josh," Mora said. "I'm not saying that Josh Rosen is going to be Peyton Manning, but you see some of the same characteristics. He's different. That's what Josh is: different."
quote:
This is an opportune moment to introduce Rosen's new offensive coordinator, Kennedy Polamalu, and new quarterbacks coach, Marques Tuiasosopo. Under instructions from Mora, they have collaborated on a new offense that moves away from the screen passes, read options and shotgun formations of the old spread scheme under former coordinator Noel Mazzone, now at Texas A&M, and resembles a stereotypical pro-style attack, with Rosen often under center with fullbacks and tight ends awaiting his direction.

It’s the Josh Rosen Show
UCLA used its final allotted practice time of the year to do just that -- practice. There weren’t any official stats or some strange scoring system like at some other places, but that really didn’t seem to matter to fans who showed up at Drake Stadium on Saturday, UCLA’s home for soccer and track and field. Rosen was enough. His performance wasn’t flawless by any means, but that had no impact on the attention he received before, during and after. Fans young and old wore his jersey and chased him down for postgame autographs as he was ushered off the field with a small security detail. He's clearly the real deal and should enter 2016 as a serious Heisman Trophy candidate. Get used to it because the hype train isn’t slowing down any time soon.
quote:
UCLA doesn’t give a spring MVP, but if it did …
“It would be Tak McKinley,” coach Jim Mora said.
After starting 12 games last year and finishing with 7.5 tackles for loss, Mora has even higher hopes for McKinley, who has a rare combination of speed and power. He weighs 265 pounds, but in high school ran a 10.6-second 100-meter dash, Mora said, and defensive coordinator Tom Bradley is scheming him into more situations on the edge where he can make an impact rushing the passer. Offensive tackle Conor McDermott said he’s noticed a big difference in McKinley’s power this spring. He’s always been fast, but his added strength could make him more of a difference-maker next year.

as an aggie rosen scares me. but im not too worried about how our secondary should handle UCLAs receivers. they wont be used to the physicality and the jams that we will do to them and that is going to go a long way for us

I am with a pretty sizable group of people
We had about 20 in Nashville and I imagine it will be most of the same group

This year we'll be fine against UCLA bc our ends will be healthy and ready to go. They'll get after Rosen and so I think we win week one in nice fashion. Going to so cal likely w/o either of those two ends in 17 will be a different story though lol

I think everybody is well aware that this will not be the UCLA team that went 8-5 last year. They lost against ASU, Stanford (Fear the Tree!), Washington State, USC, and Nebraska. They are not expected to be among the top contenders in the PAC. They lost both their offensive coordinator and QB coach to A&M. They replaced them with recruiters who reportedly have never called an offense.
They are losing almost every skill player on offense along with 2 of their offensive lineman. They have resorted to likely starting ex-Sip, Jake Raulerson, at center. Our defensive line is going to have a "field day"!!
Thier defense is scary on paper still. They know many of Mazzone's tendencies. I see a bunch of players that A&M had tried to recruit in Deon Hollins, Kenny Young, Isaako Savaiinaea, Ismael Adams, and T. Goodman. Eddie Vanderdoes was a National recruit that A&M had no shot to land.

In recruiting, it doesn't matter who you can't get, it's who you get that can't play.

The deserved hype of Rosen has hidden the fact that UCLA is probably a 7 win team. They lost nearly every major contributor from an 8-5 team and have two new coordinators.
IMO this game will go a lot like the ASU game last year, with us getting more credit for the win than we probably deserve. We'll learn a lot more about our team two weeks later at Auburn.
That being said, if we lose to the Bruins it means we're probably looking at 5-7. Only one or two of our conference games will be easier.

quote:while youre right that UCLA is not a great team on paper and the bruins are going to rely heavily on rosen to get the team going this year, its not like UCLA was a shitty team last year. we went 8-5 because myles jack, eddie vanderdoes, and our best player out of our secondary all suffered season ending injuries within a 6 day span in early october. UCLA has a lot of talent on defense which should make the game difficult but we should win because we just have more talent

I do think they will have a great defense, but I just don't think that offense is going to be ready at the beginning of the season.
Rosen is going to have to come to Kyle Field with a hyped fan-base. The West Coast offense is generally a "slower" developing offense, which will play into A&M strengths. Jake Raulerson anchoring the middle is going to limit their running game. It looks like Massington is the only WR over 5-10, which is going to be an issue against press man coverage. A&M may have issues covering TEs if they make mental errors, but Soso isn't going to surprise anybody coming out of the backfield at 6'3".

Said differently, it's not the quality of the player you recruit as much as it is the quality of the play you get out of the recruit?
