Article on UCLA's new offense, some things that stood out to me...

First, huge advantage for A&M with Chavis going against a novice play caller

quote:

UCLA’s new pro-style offense was designed largely to help facilitate the star sophomore quarterback’s growth as a signal caller, Polamalu said.

“I think it’s very important for the development of a young man like himself – that he has to see the big picture, not just ‘hey, half the field is open,’” Polamalu said. “The next level, you’ve got to be able to call plays, and change the plays, change the direction, change those things.”
I think our defensive line is going to tee off against Rosen if he's consistently making deep drops and having to go through multiple reads. Should also be an opportunity for our safeties to make plays in coverage

quote:

The competition at the running back position, held down by the elusive Paul Perkins last year, is wide open at this point, Polamalu said, with five powerful backs competing for time: junior Nate Starks, sophomores Soso Jamabo and Bolu Olorunfunmi and freshmen Brandon Stephens and Jalen Starks.
Jamabo and Stephens are two TX kids A&M was after. Would love to see us shut them down.

quote:

In both the running and the passing game, UCLA will lean heavily on the tight end position, which was nonexistent in the offense of previous years, to keep opposing defenses off balance.

Redshirt senior Nate Iese, who has spent time at defensive end and at the F-back position during his time at UCLA, will start in the tight end role. If the 6-foot-3, 242-pounder can hold his own against defensive linemen and linebackers as a blocker, he should find himself in advantageous matchups as a receiver.
I like that a key position in the offense is being manned by a guy who didn't play the position last year.

What's the word on their offensive line? Was wondering how much experience they return especially at tackle

Last year they were great at pass protection (#3 nationally in Adjusted Sack Rate) and they return their LT and LG. Everyone else is brand new, so not sure what to expect from them. A couple 3-stars and a 4-star are the projected new starters, all 3 are relatively old (at least their 3rd yr on campus)

And Polamalu, their new OC, is big on toughness, so I wouldn't expect their OL to be pushovers

its their LT and RT that they return. The LT is a projected 1st rounder and the RT made the all freshman team last year. they might slow down garrett and hall but i expect our DTs to be hell on them. Similar to the AZ state game, i think both offenses struggle

I predict that at least 1/4 of the crowd will have heat-related issues by halftime.

No joke. Young Alumni weekend, so hydration will be an issue

I think we win this one comfortably, unless Rosen is on his way to a Heisman campaign.

I thought Caleb Benenoch played RT last year

Edit: looks like their new RT Kolton Miller (the freshman AA) was a backup LT last year, played in 4 games.

Rosen scares me but I don't think any of UCLAs receivers will be prepared for how much well pressure them at the line. I think we win a close one but knight is going to have to make plays

I'm kind of surprised the O/u is 55, I think it could be like 21-17 type game too

Unknowns on both offenses and two pretty solid defenses

I know my score prediction seems homerish but I see us looking like world beaters in game one. Chavis will hold them under 17 and Mazzone will put up 40+

I'll wager beer and burgers at the Chicken that I'm right with anyone

O/U at 55 is way too high. I usually make a point not to bet Aggie games, but no way in hell that gets hit.
