On the goal line read play in OT Tennessee tried to do this

they probably did it on half of all snaps. I haven't rewatched the 2h or OT yet but in the 1h this was a constant theme, mostly on Barnett's side (don't think any of their other ends were quick enough to pull it off)

Knight was clearly confused by it as the first 2-3 times he pulled it he ran straight into the Mike.

Not sure if that was something they've done before but we definitely struggled with it. Several times it left our blocking scheme looking silly as neither the DE crashing or the MLB stunting were accounted for meaning whether Trevor kept or handed off, there was an unblocked guy the ball carrier had to beat.

Has RSJ lined up as a set TE this year? I can't remember but seems like he has a few times with one being a catch if I recall correctly

Ok This makes more sense, as earlier in the year we did it very well.

So how do you beat a scheme where there are two defenders playing the read? Is that where the RPO comes in?

He's ran his cues correctly the entire year according to the staff. I think they just decided that being up by two TDs, they weren't going to do any risky plays that would risk hurting Trevor before the Bama game. I believe they even brought Ford in for a couple series hoping they could just close out the game with his running, but UT adjusted their defense after the long injury time out.

Exactly, we were going to try to grind the clock out but our defense was just too tired to keep Tennessee from putting up more points

This is the only thing I consistently noticed live at the game. We had multiple first downs that we missed out on because he kept giving the ball when he had a wide open field in front of him

here's an example where #9 crashed and #53 has outside contain. LINK

TK is reading off Barnett (#9) and so he kept. The way the play is set up, Gennessy blocks down and chips the DT with Prater and proceeds to the 2nd level to wall off the MLB. But UT slanted the whole line left and looped the Mike around to the edge.

Handing off on this played probably is a massive gain because playside you have 5 blocking 3 and no 2nd level (pause at 12:29 and imagine TW has the ball). They don't have another end besides #9 that would have any chance to make that play. TW probably still gets by Barnett here and then he's in the secondary and off to the races.

There are several options to combat this but it's easier said than done on the fly because you may not realize what exactly they did here and even if you do, you have no practice reading the LB like that. You may well be asking Knight to do it for the first time in a game (not impossible but results may vary). But honestly this is a high risk play by UT and we knocked off a few huge runs late because of scheming like this.

So could you kinda keep a defense honest with a two back set? They wouldn't know which direction to crash and have the trailing LB fill.
