Making a trip there in early March and wanna eat nothing but fire arse Mexican food.
I've been to El Tiempo and Torchy's Tacos (I'm aware it started in Austin). They were both sublime.

Ninfa's on Navigation (The original) is my favorite.
Echiladas de Tejas at Molina's Cantina on Bellaire are really good as well.
If you are there on the weekend, Cyclone Anaya's has Bottomless ($10 for the first ans a penny for each following i believe.) mimosas for brunch. Not the biggest fan of the food, but it fits the genre and depending on the crowd you're with it can certainly be a good time

if you like a lime marinade, you need to go to Lupe Tortillas.
It's more expensive than it should be but the beans and pico you get with chips may as well be laced with crack.
The carne asada is my favorite.

As a resident Montrosian I will say I go to various places depending on what I'm craving. I value them all for what they excel in.
1) You can never go wrong with Ninfa's on Navigation for anything if you want to venture out east.
2) El Real (Westheimer between Commonweath and Montrose) - Good Enchiladas. Also can put a fried egg on anything there. Good Mexican Breakfast.
Side note if you are into good spicy Scheczuan Chinese Go to Mala's Schezuan Bistro next door to El Real. Amazing.
3) El Tiempo 1308 Annex (Taft and Westheimer) or 1308 Cantina (Montrose and West Grayish) - Fajitas and Margs.
- Rice has pasta and veggies which I don't love.
- Love their Queso con Carne and Green Sauce.
El Tiempo is the more expensive of them all.
I could walk to either 1308 Annex or El Real from my old house and would just depend on what I wanted.
Good Local Joint now 1 block to my new house. La Tapitia (Richmond between Woodhead and Dunlavy). Good Margs, Good Bar Crowd sports always on the TV, Consistently good across the menu and cheaper than any of the above. Much more of a neighborhood place. I do the Beto's combo here. 2 Enchiladas / 1 Tamale and a Crispy Taco for like 9 bucks. The Mexican Street Tacos with beef are actually pretty good as well. Good Mexican breakfast.
Molina's is another local chain. Middle of the Pack in my view best thing there is the Jose's Dip.
Lupe Tortilla, Fajitas are good, as mentioned Limey which is good from time to time but I prefer the above over Lupes.
Cyclone Anaya's if I lived closer to one I'd go more. but would say when I go there I typically order the Tacos al Carbon. Good portion size and get covered with queso.
El Pico on Richmond and Kirby had a good brunch. I don't know why I don't venture that way more.
Papasitos across the street is good to, I'd put any Pappasitos above Lupes in the Houston Chain wars.

I'm no expert but I have always loved Los Tios

La Tapatia may be one of the most legit mentions.... It's good and cheap, just like Mexican food should be. Probably best whilst drunk.
Been to most of what you mentioned and the ones I've visited are all damn good.

If they serve flour tortillas, it ain't real Mexican.
Most of the restaurants listed aren't real Mexican; they're Tex Mex. Just pick a taco truck and you're good to go if you really want real Mexican.

Brothers Tacos and Villa Acros are two good tacos near Ninfas.
El Tiempo breakfast tacos are also legit.
Dizzy Kactus is a new taco joint off Main downtown
Taqueria Elena and Taco Keto are two food trucks off 45, a bit more authentico

A lot of people in Northern Mexico eat flour tortillas, but it's true that corn tortillas are the rule further south. Most good restaurants will offer both.
Agreed on the food trucks; there's a good argument to be made that the "realest" Mexican food is the street food.

First question when you try a new place out,
Are the corn tortillas home made?

Irma's near minute maid is another slightly expensive place. A bit unique, they don't really bring you a menu, you just wing it with your order

Ninfa's on Nav for Tex Mex
Laredo Taqueria on Washington Ave has my favorite authentic Mexican tacos
Irma's is a great suggestion as well
This is assuming you're going to be inside the loop

Norteños do. But even then the corn tortilla still rules king in "El Norte". South of Monterrey, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone serving flour tortillas with their meal courses.
But to be honest, my main gripe with these (in)famous faux Mexican restaurants ain't even the tortillas. It's the damn cheese ! This abomination they call "Mexican blend cheese" is as Mexican as sushi. The most popular cheese found in Mexico is "Queso Fresco" and it's damn good (Asadero and Oaxaca style are also acceptable for quesadillas in certain regions). The cheese you find in quesadillas, enchiladas, and even refried beans around Houston ain't Mexican. It's probably made somewhere in the Midwest and packaged right alongside Taco Bell cheese. .
(Disclaimer; I just came back from Mexico and ate Mexican food...So excuse my Mexican food snobbiness )
