How much is the network going to be worth to each school?
It’s hard to count that high.

Based on the rate within SEC states alone, if you multiply $1.30 times 12 months times the estimated 30 million subscribers in that footprint, you get $468 million. That would be $33.4 million per school — per year. And that’s without counting advertising revenue or subscribers from non-SEC states. Factor that in, and the SEC Network could easily be worth $500 million per year or $35.7 million per school once full distribution is achieved.

This part is misleading, as it assumes that all revenue is profit, and that ESPN gets no cut in the profits.

...though I do think he's underestimating advertising revenue.

Good link. Corndogs are in for a rough awakening if they think that they can roll that money back into the budget. The SEC Network is going to increase the pace of the arms race of facilities.

I found this part interesting:

quote:

Meanwhile, people like Alleva and SEC Commissioner Mike Slive suggested the network is available to any and all who want to drop their current provider and switch to AT&T or Dish Network. That rather cavalier attitude reflects the SEC’s hard line and confident bargaining position.

So many SEC fans seem to assume that they will get the network before the fall, but it has been obvious to me that isn't the case.

If the big ones (like DirecTV, Comcast, TWC, etc.) bite year one you left money on the table for future years. The negotiations will ramp up when SEC fans can't get access and they are poisoning the trees around your office building.

Since 2011 it has been obvious to me the plan was to cash in on SEC passion to sell a product for more than its worth on paper to avoid negative PR (and other) repercussions.

A&M and SEC released the first 3 weeks tv slots

LINK

Aug. 28 5 p.m. Texas A&M at South Carolina SECN
Sept. 6 6:30 p.m. Lamar at Texas A&M SECN
Sept. 13 vs. Rice, 8 pm on ESPN2

Obviously the Rice one is the only new info. But happy to see we got another night game. Not happy with the 8pm start but I can live with it in September as at least we won't melt.

I'm fine with it, especially when we're going to have even more capacity at the stadium. If prices go too high too fast, then consumers (the fans) are going to respond accordingly. The NFL is getting hit with this problem the most right now and the teams are going to have to do something.

I predict we get one Cable One added before the season:

quote:

Trish Niemann of Cable One said she is confident a deal will be struck in time for the SEC Network's debut.

"We're optimistic we'll have the SEC Network in our cable lineup by the time it launches," Niemann said. "ESPN carries a lot of channels and the SEC Network is part of that. Our goal is to get the best channels for our customers."

Gulfport Councilman Myles Sharp recently prompted the city to pass a resolution encouraging Cable One to carry the SEC Network. He isn't surprised at Cable One making a push to get the SEC Network.

I also think Cox has to play ball. They are based in Atlanta for crying out loud.

If those two jumped on, this thing makes money year one.

DirecTV CEO Mike White once told Wall Street analysts on a conference call, according to Bloomberg, "If I could wave a wand, the first thing I would peel off is regional sports networks. The cost is just too high."

quote:

York, however, also said, "As popular as sports content is, the vast majority of consumers will not watch any national, regional or local sports network, yet the networks demand they pay a tax so that those who do want to watch it get access to it."

Parts of the negotiation between DirecTV and the SEC Network have become contentious because, as York said, the SEC Network wants to claim all of Texas as being in the "inner market" because of Texas A&M. York said it is an "absurd consumer proposition" that football fans in Austin should be considered in the "inner market" when Austin is the home of the University of Texas.

Someone should send this arse-clown the ratings of A&M games and highlight the highest cities, TO INCLUDE AUSTIN.

When he makes a comment like that despite the fact that A&M outdraws Texas almost 3 to 1 in Austin, he's either not aware or deliberately ignoring it.

they are in major carriage negotiations.

he is clearly defending DTV's position on what they think they should pay ESPN for the SECN w/a comment like that.

hey CG, do you have the article that talked about A&M having higher ratings in Austin?

I suck at google searches and need the info to show to a disbelieving sip at work.

Thanks, I've found a little on it

i thought I remembered an article that went through every metered game though.

The look on my coworkers face when I showed him that A&M/Rice had more viewers than OU/Texas this year was priceless.
