Bad company corrupts good morals. Haven't you learned anything from your prior bans that you would be safer in Chernobyl than on Tiger Rant?

I think the LSU DC job is a lot less attractive than lots of those fans will have you believe. Anyone, and more importantly, any candidate, can see three things.

Any of which can be overcome.

quote:

1. LSU's offense sucks arse.

So has the Baltimore Ravens offense most of the time. They have two Super Bowl titles. Enough quality depth on defense can overcome that.

quote:

2. Les Miles is on the hot seat.

He's on the hot seat so much you would think his throne is in Hell. Still employed despite Michigan's best efforts.

quote:

3. One of the most respected defensive coordinators just left LSU to go to rebuilding job.

Means nothing other than maybe the DC wanted a new challenge.

I really don't see how you can interpret LSU's negotiation tactics w/ Chavis, and apparent miserliness in searching for his replacement, to be anything other than laying the groundwork for Miles to be replaced in a couple of years.

The only way they could be more clear about it at this point would be to hold a press conference.

Ravens had the 10th best offense when they last won the Super Bowl. 12th ranked defense.

Apparently BJ is taking his firing hard. He's been with Sumlin since his first stop at A&M (was a GA here) and how this went down knocked the wind out of him. He was offered a role on Beaty's staff at KU and declined. Appears he's quitting coaching.

For all the hand-wringing around here for the last bit, we had the same record as LSU this year and we've had the same record over the last 3 years - and during that period LSU has had the highest paid staff in the nation.

At some point, you can't just buy the most expensive guy. Les spent 1.3m on Cam. Another 650k on Wilson. And including him 7 of his 10 coaches are offensive. And they put out a putrid product this year. If 3 years from now we go 8-5 again with a 100 level defense, Sumlin best not ask for more money to make a great hire.

Les has 1.3m to rework his staff. That's hardly miserly. He just has money tied up in all the wrong people which is his own damn fault

But the inclusion of the Les Miles clause in Chavis' contract extension wasn't a failure to buy the most expensive guy. From what I've read, it was the clause that opened the door for A&M. That and later the fact that the reworked offer, which did not include the clause, was for only two years. LSU may have been mediocre by their standards the past three seasons, but they largely HAVE that standard thanks to the job Chavis has done on the defensive side of the ball.

My point isn't that I think LSU is doing a Scrooge impersonation because they're unwilling to pay to win. I think they're trying to control costs in anticipation of buying out Miles' contract in a couple of years. I mean, Kevin Steele seems to be a legit candidate for the job. How is that possible if LSU is actually looking for a long-term solution at DC?

That sucks, the guy is an awesome recruiter. If there was any time we pull a Bama and give someone a staff job for recruiting I wouldn't mind doing it for him. Good luck to him in the next challenge.

Hopefully if that happens someone other than Sumlin will be hiring the DC.

Everything is relative. When your division rivals have DCs like Muschamp, Chavis and Smart that are all making over a $1 million a year suddenly splitting $1.3 million between two positions is pretty weaksauce.
