None of the Republicans believe in things like self-ownership or private property rights, nor do they support competitive capitalism. Like Bush, they're all too happy to bail out Wall Street instead of letting capitalism work. They artificially buoy corporations that the market dictates should fail, just like the Democrats do. They want subsidies and are more than happy to raise the debt-ceiling, as they sell off the futures of their grandchildren -- just as long as they get the pork, same as McConnell did
I'm curious as to why you lump Cruz into this description, when it is completely opposite to just about everything he's done or said as a Senator and a candidate for President.
Same question re: Rand Paul. You really don't believe that Rand Paul believes in private property rights?

Calling my shot. I think Cruz beats Trump in Iowa today.

Can someone who follows local stuff more than me help me navigate the downballot for Houston?

Rand will almost certainly be in the race until Kentucky and so I'm going to cast a token vote for him against Cruz and then vote LP in the general.
Specifically I'm wondering
- Who do I want for railroad commish and sheriff
- Which if any of the judges and JPs have libertarian streaks
- Similarly, if there are any Paul-types running for other offices
- Who has the best chance of unseating Deb Riddle
Beyond that I'll probably just vote against incumbents as usual

based on all the mailers i'm getting, everybody running is going to be the one to build a wall, make Texas pro-life, and go after sanctuary cities. that goes from my county commissioner, dog catcher, sheriff, to my state senator.

Hopefully we can pare down some of the clownshoes candidates and leave it to the three true contenders

I can't tell if Ted Cruz is running for President or Bishop. Dude needs to tone his pseudo-Christian rethoric down.

Yeah he's in "over-the-top Joel Osteen impression" Ted Cruz mode tonight. I switched to Sportscenter

If I voted Republican, it would be for Paul. No question. Let me just preface my comments with that statement.
Paul supports privacy rights against the NSA (i.e. your own government spying on you), as well as (some) private property rights. He is also smart enough to admit the colossal money-sink the War on Drugs is. Not that I don't think fighting criminal elements isn't something we should be doing, but cannabis is a joke.
Regardless of my own personal opinion of the matter, I have to distill my decision down to a matter of states' rights. If a state wants to legalize pot, then the state should have that right. I would like a movement more to states self-determining their own course of action, and what's best for them, instead of the federal government intervening.
Cruz is for that intervention on a federal level. I am not. He also supports the data collection of American citizens by its own government, something I am against, as well. To that end, Cruz voted to extend the Patriot Act. Something I want to see gone.
As for social issues, I'm much more in line with, say, CATO than any of the Republican candidates. I believe in freedom for everyone to choose their own path of life, as well as their own happiness -- something stated explicitly in the Declaration of Independence. Cruz does not.
I hope that answers your question. Thanks for including a fellow Texan in the discussion, guys.

Was a fun night to watch. Cruz, Rubio, and Bern won the night.
Rubio had a great speech. Sanders is a psycho, but a sincere one. Cruz' speech was a little ridiculous, but I'm glad to see him take down Trump and Establishment types.
If I could take Cruz' stances and put them in Rubio's body, it'd be a no brainier.

It does, CowTown; thanks for your perspective, and as far as I'm concerned, you're always welcome to participate in any discussion here.

I frequented the board a lot to stay abreast of the things going on in Texas. I used to live in Sugar Land, and Houston always seemed to be such an A&M stronghold.
Had a lot of family that went to A&M, and only one that fell to the dark side and went to UT. So glad y'all are finally out of that Big 12 mess. It was funny, because when y'all joined the SEC, I was telling my friends about the Southwest Classic and the history with Arkansas -- over a 100 years-old -- and they looked at me like I was crazy.
People outside the state don't get it, I guess.
Caught an old Cotton Bowl on ESPN Classics: A&M vs. Auburn, back when they had Bo Jackson. I remember watching that live as a kid, and summarily rubbed it in the face of an Auburn kid who told me "Bo Jackson can't be stopped."
The old Wrecking Crew. Good times.

It certainly was a good night if you are someone who wants a Republican in the white house:
-Trump's supporters are not the same kind of people who line up to vote obviously, which hurts his chances for a nomination. The Republican Civil War might not happen.
-Clinton was shown to be defeatable. She will win the primary but she isn't a sure fire winner in the general election
-The Republicans might have a real honest-to-God "moderate" horse in the race who is very photogenic. Once the other establishment candidates fold their support in favor of Rubio there is a very good chance Rubio will be the nominee. I think Rubio could actually beat Clinton.
-Cruz is clearing the way for an establishment candidate like Rubio, as obviously his attacks on Trump worked.

Rubio is a "moderate" on immigration and only immigration

Oh I know. He is a neocon deep down, hence why I used quotes.
Given the extremes presented by Trump and Cruz he does seem like a moderate in comparison. He can easily play the moderate for the primary season as long as they keep their feet on the scale.
Then once he gets the nomination he can do the "we love hispanics" party rebrand that the GOP strategists have wanted for five years.

I think it was more that trump didn't participate in the last debate.
