We shouldn't give a ridiculous guaranteed contract extension or no buyout, the mistake we've made in the last four football coaches.

So coach of the year, sec championship, berth in sec tournament championship, 3 or 4 seed in NCAA

Still not a good year?

You're just idealistic and irrelevant.

If it's a guaranteed contract like Sumlin, then we failed again.

Yes, we damn sure don't want to lose the opportunity to fire the coach who just won the first conference championship in 30 years.

Depends on the circumstances, but I'd probably chalk that up to "shite happens".

The big puzzle to me about all the Kennedy-hate is that A&M is primarily a football school. Agree? But the basketball coach is held to a much higher standard than the football coach among many fans. That makes no sense to me. And I'm not asking anybody to rag on Sumlin, I just don't get it.

Possible explanation offered at TA the other day by... can't remember his name. A&M fans are to Kennedy as LSU fans are to Miles. No matter what Miles does, he'll never be Saban. And no matter what Kennedy does, he'll never be Billy Gillispie. Different levels of success, of course, but Saban and Gillispie are both considered the pinnacle of success in their sports at LSU and A&M and always will be, no matter what the successors do.

we are currently in year 5 of kennedy and this is the first time we are making it into the tournament after making it for six consecutive years. he is held to an insanely lower standard than any of our other coaches. he was the lowest paid coach in the SEC, or maybe the 2nd lowest paid coach in the SEC, before we figure out what his extension is. he was not held to anywhere near a higher standard. not at all. sumlin has been held at a MUCH higher standard. he has given us 2 mediocre years after 2 of the best years that a&m has had since 1998 and he is on the hot seat

It's the way in which he was hired. He jumped from a 1-bid conference school to an A&M team that made the dance 6 straight years.

His career resume SCREAMED Melvin Watkins and the results his first season validated that concern.

I don't believe in giving anyone a deal over 3 years in any sport.

honestly that's a fairly unrealistic worry.

FTR, the contract details haven't even been finalized and the release was put out entirely for recruiting purposes. The five years shows commitment to a guy that is dealing with Parkinson's and enables him to effectively counter the negative recruiting.

Our 2015 class included 4 top 40-60 players. One quit so the on court play is the result of 3 guys in that range. Our 2016 class currently has 2 in that range already signed and we're still recruiting (likely to sign at least 2 more). For 2017 we already have another in that range committed.

I'm not a huge fan of Kennedy, but the fact is he has cleared us of the APR issues and now he's accumulating a lot of excellent 4-year talent and it's going to take some extraordinary things to happen for us to fall off the map over the next 3-4 years.

So realistically there is not going to be any consideration to firing him until 4-5 years out even if he's as bad as you think. I'd suggest everyone just enjoy what we have (which is a pretty damn good and entertaining basketball team with a very bright present and future) and quit dwelling on things past.
