Hell I just see it as a waste of perfectly good seating

Because it doesn't make sense. It's totally illogical.
How do EMPTY seats honor the FANS?

How would they dishonor the Bonfire victims?
For the record, I was more on board with that being the sole reason
But several on this thread have intimated that they'd have been more upset by that than the current reason.
Also, I really don't care. Sorry for being so nonchalant. Probably has me coming off the wrong way, and I apologize.

Because it would be using the memory of the Bonfire victims to market the stadium. And it's also just weird and inappropriate. We need a constant reminder of that accident in the middle of our football stadium? Really?
I'm really glad they came out and said that wasn't the purpose.

Not to start a riot, but I don't really understand this thinking. I honestly don't see how it's really any different than the actual Bonfire Memorial. It's just a way for Aggies to remember the past and to honor the 12 who died in the bonfire. I honestly think it's kinda cool how we are staying true to who we are and remembering where we came from even when we are about to unveil the greatest football stadium in college football

Eh, I disagree. I thought it would have been very appropriate, actually. What better place to memorialize their undying love for TAMU than the shrine to football (Kyle Field) at the football school that is TAMU?

Like I said, just a very visible tribute, IMO.
It's still a moot point, but I really don't see how that would have been SO much worse, I guess.

The bonfire memorial is off on it's own where the stack fell, not shoved in your face as some marketing prop.

The bonfire accident is who we are now?

The Bonfire Memorial is right in front of one of the most prominent buildings on campus, and dominates the scenery of the east gate.

I don't think that's what he was trying to say

No need to apologize. It's your opinion and you're not trying to be a jerk about it.
The way I see it is I'd rather it be for the bonfire 12 than the current reason. At least that's a reason that makes sense. Saying that empty seats honor fans is just bizarre. We'll be lampooned for that by everyone (and I'm not talking about flames on the Rant, I'm talking about national media), and rightfully so.
That said, I could see how some people would see it as weird, and the bonfire families might veto, and they may already have, which is why we have the illogical excuse we're using for the empty seats now.
So, either way, we need to just scrap this ill-conceived idea.

Same. I don't have a problem with the current reason, it's just much weaker of a tribute than I'd originally thought it would have been if it had been for the Bonfire 12.

They really should have hammered out an ironclad (or at least a near-consensus) rationale behind the tribute before unveiling it, especially since it will be a prominent part of the stadium.
My guess is they were trying to do something visible in the vein of the #12 flagpole in Seattle's stadium, but didn't come up with a coherent facsimile.

Where will these seats reside?
Posted on 2/25/14 at 11:27 am to FleurDeLonestar
Student side, 2nd deck? iirc

Agreed. That's why going the bonfire route would have been such a horrible idea.
"Hey, we really need to find a way to put our 12th man stake in the ground after Seattle's SB win. How should we incorporate it into the new stadium?
I know! Let's use those kids that died to promote our copyright!"

50 yard line 2nd deck I'm pretty sure
At the end of day, I don't know what this is. Represent the 12th man? Well, that's the people IN the seats. Empty seats are the antithesis of the 12th man.
Anyway, if you have an opinion you want to share with the people that are making decisions, send it to steve.moore@tamus.edu as apparently he's in charge of this one.

I think this is EXACTLY what they were trying to do.
I'm no genius, but I'm a reasonably intelligent guy employed to sit and make decisions based on logic all day that are essentially "bets" on human nature and reasonable outcomes to events given a limited amount of data. I tend to take a pessimistic view because that pays me. So, in advance, I recognize that my read on this may come off as "conspiracist" or overly negative, but what I think happened is that they wanted it to be a branding/marketing vehicle that TV guys would talk about during our games. I think they initially planned on it representing the fallen 12 from bonfire, but ended up getting some backfire on that from the families or attorneys or the university and had to backtrack and come up with a new excuse. That excuse they're using now doesn't make sense because it wasn't the initial reason and they just made something up in a scramble and shoe-horned the reasoning in. They need to back ALL the way up, drop their pride, and concede that it was a poorly thought-out plan that they're not going forward with.

THIS
It's like putting up a statue of Marx holding hands with Lenin and saying: "This statue represents the pioneering capitalist economic thought of Adam Smith".

What if Alabama erected a statue of George Wallace and said "this is here to honor MLK". What? Makes as much sense as empty seats that honor the fanbase.

Are they though? I mean, if you are a modern day E. King Gill and you suit up and get on the sidelines to get ready to go in, isn't your seat empty?
I think at this exact moment I have put more thought into reasonings for these seats than the people who thought of them originally.
