With the exception of Purdue, nobody is going to hire Sumlin.

I don't know about that. We're all living in the bubble of our experience with him. From the outside, A&M is a perpetually mediocre program that he's never won less than 8 games at while playing in the SEC west. I think this is like the Hillary suppoters who genuinely completely totally fundamentally cannot believe that she lost, because within their bubble, every single person voted for her, she was Athena, and "surely everyone hates mean racist Trump".
Outside of our bubble, schools may very well be excited by the prospect of a coach with no buyout who has never done worse than 8 wins at shitty arse A&M while getting his skull cracked by Alabama and LSU every year. They may say, "hey, take away the physical abuse his teams have to take in that league and the sure losses from just plain straight-up talent-superior programs like LSU or Bama and he'd be a 10-win or better guy here at Oregon."

I went to that game. SMU was dead even with them in the first half and were down just 28-24.
The second half started with them giving up a huge kickoff return. Then Navy scored in two plays to go up 35-24. The next possession on like the second play their QB tossed a pick 6 and Navy went up 42-24.
As soon as the Navy guy crossed the goal line there was a MASS exodus of SMU fans. I'm talking something like 2/3 of the people on the alumni side just got up and walked out. As that happened all of the SMU players turned stared them down. They were obviously upset at their fans quitting on them like that. They already had to deal with the rumors of Morris going to Baylor and their fans up and quitting was the breaking point. From that moment they had zero fire and played like zombies out on the field the rest of the way.
