I think that this past year's class will be the one that proves whether this coaching staff can develop players. There is a lot of potential, but not a lot of polish. I question Butch Jones's ability to get a player to his potential, so we will see what he can do with these guys. Obviously, the position coaches and s&c program make a huge difference as well.

I think Rock, Hoke and Wells will make a pretty big difference

Hoke replaces our best position coach, so I think that's a wash.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Wells can do. Mahoney was utter dog shite.

Same with Rock. Szerszen was obviously way over his head.

Stolen from VQ -- 7 UT commits make ESPN 300. 3 in top 50:

OT Cade Mays at 17
QB Adrian Martinez at 32
WR/ATH Alontae Taylor at 47
DT Brant Lawless at 164
RB Lyn-J Dixon at 167
DE/DT Jamarcus Chatman at 264
S Brendon Harris at 281

To me this looks like a better class than the 2015 class that got all the hype.

The 2015 class are true juniors going into this season. It looks like it will make up most of our starters, too. IMO the class will need to add several surprises and close out well to match/surpass it. Certainly not out of the realm of possibility, especially if we can exceeded our low expectations this year. The 2014 class as a whole was disappointing and this one will be better most likely.

I think I meant '14. Recruiting class dates mess with me when I'm not paying close attention.

From Jesse Simonton regarding JUCO DE Dorian Gerald. 2 man race between UT and USC. They more or less implied that the biggest reason that he would choose South Carolina over UT would be because of the immediate playing time available there. However, Simonton still thinks UT is the favorite to land him. Gerald and his family are very high on UT and Knoxville despite being from SC. Quotes from this morning below:

quote:

Yes, both staffs are confident here, but as of today, I still think it's UT. Gerald could commit at anytime, but like what was said in the WR, I expect a decision sometime in the next 7-10 days.

#10 National Juco player and #2 DE. Highlight tape below. Just my thoughts, but I'm a fan of his game and would like this pickup.

HUDL

Random thought: He's playing JUCO ball out in my hometown which I thought was pretty cool.

tbh taking a Juco is concerning because it leads me to believe the coaches aren't thrilled with what they have now at DE.

But as a player this guy looks the part. Great offer list (Florida, Florida St,Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma) and good film. When the services actually grade JUCOs I am sure he will be a consensus 4*. Trust Hoke to get us right on the Dline, I guess.

Recent DE recruiting outside of Butler has left me feeling a little meh. He would give us a legit 4 deep at DE with Kongbo, Taylor, Phillips and Gerald all looking like they can be productive for us next season. I'd let the younger guys like Thaxton and Butler learn behind them and continue to get stronger and build maturity.

I agree that I think he'll be a 4* by the time it's all said and done for the star gazers. He's pretty close as it is.

What part of SC are they from? There have been a few SC players we've gotten that we're as close to us as they were Clemson and I'm sure something similar holds for Columbia depending on the part of the state they're from. People really don't understand how close Knoxville is to everything and what an easy drive it is for people -- even when it's a longer distance than another school we're competing with it's often easier to get here.

I'm not positive which city they are from, but he said that distance was not a factor. Pointed to the fact that he has lived in LA the last 2 years and enjoyed being on the other side of the country.

Fractured fibula / dislocated ankle. They said he's going to need surgery and expected to be out about 6 weeks. If that's true than it's better than how they made it sound initially.

It apparently looked bad/was a freak accident but appears that recovery is pretty straight forward.

Hopefully he can get healthy and come back for the majority of his senior year. Tough setback for the kid.

We need to target some LBs, WRs and corners. But I really like this class so far.
