It has nothing to do with success. Haslam has this misguided opinion that being good at football ruins Tennessee's reputation as a school.
Yeah...since Haslam was on a team that won a National Championship...and was Captain of a team that finished in the top 10, it makes sense that he would be dead set against having a successful football team.
That is ridiculous. What is more likely is that he thinks a coach should have a different persona, and is nixing these hires based on his personal bias against their celebrity status.

If you’re against Gruden and pro Bobo/someone like that, you certainly cannot claim to be serious about winning.

If I'm Currie and I want and am able to hire Gruden but Haslam (or Davenport or anyone who has the power to block this) is saying no, I'm resigning immediately and letting them deal with it. No way would I consider trotting some random asshat out there and telling the fan base it's the best Tennessee could do.
That's a huge "if" though. Still don't see Gruden taking it.

I think you do it regardless or "accidentally" let something leak showing that you tried and that Haslams were who were standing in the way. At least then either public outcry pushes Haslams to budge or Curry at least covers his arse.

Well if Haslam pours a lot of money into a Gruden contract, I’ll gladly eat crow.

Alright. I'm fully torqued.

What is something all three of these VFLs have in common? Who could their source possibly be?

Is that a rhetorical question? Because I am curious

I'm assuming Phil is their source

It's time to begin preparations for the offseason, thankfully this season has provided a nice 2 month head start
