For historical perspective - here are the records of the teams LSU played in '88:
We already established those teams were only good from a historical perspective, but actually sucked that year

Well this thread has turned into a giant pissing match. Sucks because the focus should be on how awesome these schedules used to be! Really wish the Big 5 would start to standardize OOC requirements.

Yeh I dont want it to go that way. Auburns 83 season is prolly the toughest. My original argument only was meant from a scheduling standpoint. Southern miss 83 was actually better than Ohio St 88. My point was we would all much rather our AD schedule Ohio st though

Another great anomaly about the '83 final AP rankings:

#1 Miami 11-1 (lost to #6 UF)
#2 Nebraska 11-1 (lost to #1 Miami)
#3 Auburn 11-1 (lost to #5 Texas)
#4 UGa 10-1-1 (lost to #3 Auburn)
#5 Texas 11-1 (lost to #4 UGa)
#6 UF 9-2-1 (lost to #3 Auburn, #4 UGa)

Only 7 losses combined by the top 6 - all to one another.

And Alabama is the only team to ever finish a season against #1 and #2, as well as 10 bowl teams.
Not to measure dicks here, but Auburn finished against the #1, #5, & #1 teams last year, as well as 10 bowl teams.

AU was the 1983 national champion whether that bothers you or not. If you cannot agree they were the most deserving team in 1983 of the NC, you are pretty clueless.

I guess only counting poll titles applies to Alabama.

We were SEC champs, and Miami absolutely ripped us a new one.

Still can't believe that Miami team dropped the ND game and the title, because that was easily the best team in the country (they were the year before and the year after, too).

Yup!

1983 National Champion AU Tigers.

Really that 1983 season was one hell of a season that ended in one hell of a clusterfrick. Might have been the GOAT playoff, and probably the best top 6 in college football history.

For those that really understand that season, the real debate for number 1 is between AU and Texas.

AU still wins that debate, but it is close.

Miami and Nebraska aren't really in the discussion and AU, Texas, UGA, and UF were ALL better than either one of the teams and all 4 might have beaten Miami or Nebraska by double digits on a neutral field.

I know, I know. I'm just messing with you. I get that technically you guys are co-champs. And I get that you guys were probably the best team.

Its just that neither of the major polls picked you. But you knew that already.

The 1983 season is my hot button here. It is even why I made my username what it is.

After Bowl voting for the AP started in 1968. UPI followed suit in 1974 after Bama was named national champs in 1973 and lost to Notre Dame in the Bowl.
