That 88 loss to Ohio State on the road was brutal. We were up 33-20 with 4:30 left in the game. I think Bo Pelini played in that game.

Generally considered the toughest schedule in the history of college football, by Auburn fans.

But the most interesting controversy of 1983 is #1, where 11-1 Miami-Florida landed after a monumental upset of Nebraska in the Orange Bowl, jumping over 11-1 Auburn, who played a schedule that was far tougher. In fact, it was the toughest schedule in college football that year. In further fact, it was and still is one of the toughest schedules ever played in college football history

quote:

to appreciate what the ’83 team accomplished, you must see that schedule. Auburn defeated four Top Ten teams (and also No. 19 Alabama) in their last five games.

quote:

Auburn had played the toughest schedule in the nation, including eight bowl teams, seven of which were ranked in the top 20 (four in the top ten).

quote:

The SRS formula ranks Auburn No. 1, Miami No. 4. Auburn played one of the toughest schedules in college football history.

they had a respectable year. Certainly not a "cupcake" at the level that Charleston Southern, UAB or Furman is.

FSU had gone 9-1-1 in 1964 and beaten Oklahoma in the Gator Bowl.

So no, they did not "suck"

and tell me that that was not a bad arse schedule...

makes me want to see the Power 5 games only rule pass...

Check out the non conference games and the 3 road games early in the schedule

When SCAR was an independent we had to play schedules like that all the time ... Michigan, Nebraska, FSU every year, Southern Cal, Miami.

Independents basically had their own conference and we always played one another. Va Tech, WVA, the ones above, etc.

But we soon learned the strength is not in the schedule you play, but rather the conference you play-in.

Conferences hold all the power.

In the SEC you have to be careful not to overschedule.

SCAR still schedules tough, with non-conference home and homes like UNC, UCF, NC State, ECU, Clemson every year.

One thing that becomes a problem is when you reach a point where you schedule games in which you have nothing to gain and everything to lose ... or, you reach a point where other good teams do not want to schedule you for the same reasons, or fear of you breaking into their recruiting territory.

Every objective analysis ever says AU was the better, more deserving team in 1983and AU was selected as NC in a frickload of NC selectors.

AU was the 1983 national champion whether that bothers you or not. If you cannot agree they were the most deserving team in 1983 of the NC, you are pretty clueless.

aTm has Uncle Mo on their side right now, but let's be honest...

aTm < Texas

BUT, you are correct, your schedule does look tougher.

Oh well..that's not what the polls said, and during that era that's what mattered.

Doesn't bother me at all, it might bother Miami though since they actually finished #1.

The same thing happened to Alabama in 1977. They played the toughest schedule in the nation and were ranked #3 going into the Bowls. #5 Notre Dame beat # 1 Texas, #2 lost too, and jumped Bama to #1. Bama thrashed Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl 35-6. Notre Dame's only loss that year? To Ole Miss.

True. Biggest frick up in the history of the polls for sure.

EVERYONE that has compared those teams says AU > Miami. I can link 5-10 articles that break it down. It is 10-0, AU was the NC, not Miami.

First of all, I went by historical relevance of programs. Go back and find the exact record for every single team listed in 83 and 88 if you want to do it that way

I see two "one of's" and a couple "hardest that year".

Nothing definitively saying it is the toughest ever.
