I really like those new UGA business buildings. Our business school is an abortion of modern and post-modern crap. I hate our well-regarded architecture school.

Not to bring up bad memories but did the tornado mess up the campus? does that have anything to do with stuff looking new?
There are/were some really old buildings, dorms, facilities on campus that were in need of heavy renovation or complete rebuild. The student population as nearly doubled in the last 6-8 years and with the increase in students comes a major boom in construction. Also, all freshman are required to live on campus so they had to provide housing to accomodate.

We were driving on campus and I came to this intersection and there was a fountain in the middle of the road. Neither of us had a clue where we were, what the buildings were or what the fountain was for.
Put me north of Gorgas, and I'd have no idea how to get around campus anymore. That whole area is like a foreign country to me. RIP Riverside Amphitheater.
I graduated in 98 though.

Do UGA alumni stand to make 1000x more money in their lifetimes? Are they gaining 1000x more knowledge?
most state university schools acting like the education they receive is so much better than another based on arbitrary university rankings has always been hilarious to me. too many people think that those rankings are based solely on the education they received, when, in reality, the majority of students are majoring in a liberal arts degree that teaches the same exact material at 95% of the universities across the country. unless you majored in a specialized program nationally regarded throughout the country at said university, employers are not going to value something like a poly sci degree from UGA any more than a poly sci degree from mississippi state

Does anyone know what they are doing to the old Palmer Hall spot?

Yes, or torn down. Paty and Tutweiler are just about the only really ugly/out of place buildings left at this point. ten Hoor is even being renovated.

Most have. There's still a few that need a facelift or get torn down (Paty, Burke, etc.).

Ole Miss has been doing this too the last 10 years. Absolutely blowing up with new buildings.

I've spent some good time in Paty. Did they kick those geeds across the street out yet? Mallet assembly believe.

Arkansas has grown tremendously recently as well. Dormitory construction has ground to a halt, though, primarily due to private companies building student-oriented apartment buildings in the neighbhorhoods adjacent to campus. Walkable and urban, but spurring fears of turning downtown Fayetteville into Austin's west campus neighborhood. These two are built, and three more large ones are approved.

Well during the recession when most schools were laying off faculty and closing departments, UA actually hired more professors. It's not an "either or" situation.
I'm just speaking specifically of Tennessee. They were cutting programs left and right; however, they built a brand new business school building (they basically kept the front facade of the former and tripled the size of the new building), a new engineering building, a new aquatics center, a new student health center that dwarfs the previous, a new university center, new freshman dorm rooms, massive renovation to all the historic buildings on campus, a new music building, senator howard baker center for public policy, etc. It's just crazy to me that they had no problem with using millions of state money to build facilities but little on the actual academics side. Granted, yes, some of the buildings were private donations specifically for new buildings, such as Bill Haslam donating the money for the new business building (formally Glocker). But still, UT build an enormous new student aquatic center as an extension of the student rec center all while cutting dozens of existing scholastic programs. I just think it's all a sham to put lipstick on a pig at so many universities across the country. They want to make the school appear more attractive while students are, in actuality, suffering with rising tuition costs and diminishing academic opportunities in many programs.

quote:Bama is rapidly becoming a pedestrian only campus. They are doing their level best to deter students from bringing cars on campus. There are transits/trolleys that run routes every 4-5 minutes from just about any campus location. Bikes rent for $10/mo or students bring their own to campus. Trolley's are plentiful.
