our defensive recruiting has greatly improved since his arrival. looks like it will happen again this year. hopefully our admin will lock him for a good bit of time. give the man the $$ that keeps in CS.

They are better coaches because they've proven the ability to win with different formulas. We haven't seen Sumlin do that at this point. Since the point of this thread is about "would you trade your coach", why would I necessarily want a coach that has one formula?

Because the offense part of his formula is always good. The defense part of Saban's formula is always good. They've got a similar formula but on opposite sides of the ball.

How can you say that Sumlin's formula is based on offense but you don't say Saban's formula is based on defense. You called me dense but you seem suspect in that area.

I know the recruiting is good but right now the performance is awful. I'm not sure if they're just not there yet or the defensive coaches aren't getting them there fast enough. I think it is a legit concern. It is the opposite of how I look at Muschamp. His defenses are amazing but I'm waiting to see him have a decent offense still.

I guess we're just not going to agree here. I just see a small sample size of 70 games for Sumlin. That's my issue with regards to the point of this thread.

That might be a fair point. LSU's defense isn't very good right now but Chavis and Miles are very proven. They just lost too much talent in the NFL Draft which shows how good they coach them up.

I'm just not 100% sold on Sumlin making a defense at this point. That being said, I wasn't sold on Miles having an offense but Cam and a good QB changed that. I'm sold on Sumlin because I think he's a young proactive guy that is only going to get better.

we had a decent defense last year. it wasnt great but it was decent. we just need our players to mature and they arent there yet. we will never have a top 10 defense but we dont need one to win. we just need a decent one. but we cant have defenses as bad as this one going forward

Time will tell. But we have certainly recruited more defensive studs the past two years than ever, really. so there is hope. let's see how they develop.

The only reason I question it is that the Big 12 constantly has garbage defenses. They say it is because the offenses are so good but honestly they get crushed in big match ups. I do think Sumlin is a different guy though.

in regards to our defense...

last year was Sumlin's first signing class that was all his.

per rivals, we took FIFTEEN 4* recruits. Of those 15:

3 DB's
3 DT's
1 DE

so, half of our "studs" we recruited are addressing our defensive weakness. Also, of our 30 players we signed (some enrolling early), 17 are on the defensive side of the ball.

In other words, Sumlin isn't just going after offensive players and ignoring defense

well thats what im saying. we cant have a defense that is Big 12 esque as it is now, but it doenst need to be on bamas or floridas level. it just needs to be decent. only time will tell if sumlin can put it together, but we are bringing in the right players to do so

It isn't just about recruiting, its about coaching them up. Many guys have recruited well and not fixed the issues. Miles has been loaded with talent for years but had a bad offense. It took a good QB and a good OC to fix it. Recruiting doesn't cure everything although it is very important.

if it's about coaching them up, then KDS is the man

I can see why LSU and Bama fans wouldn't trade their coaches, but I think most would agree Sumlin's potential with A&M's resources and talent base is as high as any coach in the SEC, he's building the depth through recruiting we're gonna need to compete year after year, thank God we've got JFF to mask our deficiencies on defense this year, but if you don't think Sumlin knows we need help on d, you don't follow our recruiting at all

Nope

Bielema has proven way more than Sumlin

Such as a losing record against Big 10 teams with a pulse?

Nah. He puts together a great staff and has good results managing the program. Academics are doing great.

Is that such a bad result for a second year coach in the SEC west?

They said the same thing about Baylor without RG3.
