Spurrier would have been a hall of famer even if he didn't return to the NCAA after Florida. He really hasn't done much in the past 15 years though. At this point, he's one of the more overrated coaches in college football.

Well depends how many of Johnny Vaught's nattys you are counting. Ole Miss claims 3, the SEC I know recognizes at least 1. Either way, Vaught has 6 SEC titles.

Vaught is in the discussion for top tier, he did beat Neyland twice, something the Bear never did.

He also had a losing record to Neyland tho.

Spurrier being ahead of Neyland is ridiculous. My opinion it's Bryant and Neyland and then everyone else.

Indubitably, although I think Saban has earned a seat at the GOAT table.

What hurts Saban is not staying at a program for the long haul. Don't get me wrong I think Saban is one of the best but his job jumping has hurt him. Just my opinion.

"If anybody thinks Saban or Meyer or whoever else would have had any more success at South Carolina than Spurrier has you're crazy."

YES, when he passes Bear Bryant for most wins in SEC history there can be no doubt. He is already second.

1. Clay Travis is an imbecile.

2. Spurrier is awesome but he didn't stay at Florida long enough and he has done great work at USCe but it wasn't ready for the heights that those other coach's programs went to.

In some ways what he is achieving at USCe is more impressive considering how terrible that program once was but still no.

Two names didn't get mentioned earlier in this thread that should for upper tier status. One is Bud Wilkinson at Oklahoma. That consecutive win streak may never be beaten.

The other one (and I know it'll get scoffed at) is Lou Holtz. Everywhere he went he turned programs around (NC State, Arkansas, ND...he even knocked off the Buckeyes x2 in bowl games at SCar) and won a title. People see him more as the cartoon character on ESPN, but he was a helluva coach*.

The SEC's Mt Rushmore of coaching is Bryant, Neyland, Saban, and Spurrier. If Spurrier is 4th on that list, it's a pretty awesome 4th place.

It would take Spurrier at least 4 and a half years to do that averaging six conference wins a year which is generous. He aint lasting that long and he ain't averaging that many conference wins a year

You realize they are only referring to SEC coaches?

Earlier in the thread guys were tossing everyone's names out there. I was responding to that.

SEC only: Vince needs to get a little more run. He won a shite-ton for a long time. Notched one NC, and had a shot at a couple more. I'd put him on the same level as Thomas, Spurrier, Vaught, & Miles below the Bryant, Meyer, Saban, Neyland tier.

Does Bear Bryant's stint at that shitty program in Texas hurt his legacy?

Vaught has 190 wins. I dont feel like looking it up, but I think Vaught was like 5-6-1 against Bear and 2-3 against Neyland. What gets me is, why in the hell didnt they play against each other more?

Vaught started towards the end of Neyland's career, to his credit he won his first 2 games against Neyland.

Like I said, he belongs in the discussion for the top tier.
