Say you were in charge of hiring your school's next head coach. Would you consider hiring Butch Jones?

Take everything into account (recruiting, in-game coaching, his ability to put together a quality staff, etc), and assume money is not an issue.

This is mainly directed towards fans of the teams that are making coaching changes or considering it, but anyone can weigh in.

No - but if I was at a place like Missouri, South Carolina, Miami, Illinois, Maryland I would definitely consider it. At the worst the guy will upgrade your talent base, develop solid alumni relations and set you up for the next guy.

The only way I would hire Butch Jones, is if I was directing a remake of Gomer Pyle, USMC and needed a stand in for Sargent Carter. Otherwise, I wouldn't hire him to trim hedges.

Wasn't he going to Colorado before Tennessee settled for him?

Honest opinion: he would probably get us to 6 wins every other (if not every) season. I don't see him getting us much higher than that though so I think we can do better.

He hasn't done bad at UT, he's certainly owned us. It just seems he can't get past the point of "rebuilding" and "were young". That's worrisome.

Over whom? This is an extremely conditional statement.

Do I have interest from Herman or Smart? Then no, I roll the dice with an unproven. If my other option is Skip Holtz or Bob Davie, then yeah, I'll hire Jones for a few years until the coaching landscape changes.

I would hire him and give him a raise and extension for 7 and 8 win seasons.

The good news for Tennessee though is that he has broken their cycle. If he goes 7-5 next season they can feasibly say "look, we gave him 4 years, it is time to move on" and they will go out to find a new coach with a program that has stabilized and has solid talent.

Even if he fails and never gets over the hump he's been the ideal bridge coach from a program that was in dumpster fire mode for the previous decade.

I'd hire Gene Chizik again before Butch Jones

All of this. We couldn't pull a big name for whatever reason you choose to believe. What he has done for the program with the possibility he turned out to be a good one was all we could hope for.

Next year is his first year where that will not be a valid excuse/talking point. We'll start out pre-season top 15, or so, let's see how it plays out.

Dooley nearly destroyed this program, it was always going to be a long road back.

No. We have his twin. Great recruiter that lacks in game decisions.
