thats a real basic way of describing it but there really isnt one way to calculate WAR. places like fangraphs and baseball reference place value in different stats. for example, fangraphs uses wRC+, fip, and uzr while baseball reference uses OPS+. era, and defensive runs saved

Plus, most organizations have their own tinkered variations and internal metrics.
Coppolella has been pretty vocal that he thinks "public" WAR overvalues portions of their defensive data.

and a lot of that comes from we, the public, dont have a great metric to use towards things like defense and shite like how well catchers frame pitches and i am absolutely convinced MLB teams have their own way to do so that are a lot more reliable

Funny you say that because I read an article in a preseason magazine today quoting a bunch of FO folks who basically said they don't believe any of the pitch framing info the websites use.

which really doesnt surprise me at all
baseball prospectus just released a bunch of new stuff out into the public, mainly stuff that looks into pitching tunnels, that look really interesting to finally get into

It's all fascinating. The big data stuff is so much fun to dig through.

I'd probably go with Tim Hudson over Lee at starting pitcher if we are talking complete MLB career, though Lee had the best 5-6 year peak. David Price will likely outpace both in a few years though.

Gump, are you plain stupid?
How in the world did you miss MSU's Will Clark.
The man played 14 years in the Show, hitting 284 homeruns, 2176 hits and had a lifetime batting average of .303
How could you have been so outright stupid.
Where are you going to start Will Clark? He played 1B and he isn't starting over Todd Helton or Frank Thomas. And he isn't getting the DH spot over them either. His numbers are lower across the board. Might want to think things through before you call someone stupid.
Todd Helton: .316, 2519 Hits, 369 HR, 1406 RBI, .414 OPB, .539 SLG, .953 OPS
Frank Thomas: .301, 2468 Hits, 521 HR, 1704 RBI, .419 OPB, .555 SLG, .974 OPS
Will Clark: .303, 2176 Hits, 284 HR, 1205 RBI, .384 OBP, .497 SLG, .880 OPS

Didn't he finish at Lafayette?

Honorable mention for greatest SEC grad-in-a-baseball-movie? Mizzou class of '71.

Robby Thompson was good real good but not sure I would even have him as best SS from Florida. Ok Maybe a toss up between him and David Eckstein. David's World Series MVP gives the nod thou

I know, I know, they didn't play in the SEC, but here's some notable Mizzou guys:
Pitching:
1. Scherzer - a really good year gets him past Cliff Lee in career WAR, a couple of nice solid seasons will do the same. He's about 6 behind right now.
2. Sonny Siebert- 140-114 career MLB record, was an All-Star and a really good pitcher at his peak. Played in late 50's/early 60's at Mizzou.
Position Players:
1. Ian Kinsler - multiple All-Star, has had a really nice career. He's got over 50 career WAR for those tracking that.
2. Phil Bradley - can play a mean QB too, All-Star with over 1000 career hits. He was an OF.
3. Glenn Wrightan old timer here, having played in the 20's, mainly for the Dodgers. He was a very good player who was a SS.
4. Mike Shannon - dropped out of Mizzou after his freshmen season to sign with the Cards. Jack of all trades, as he can play outfield, 3B, announce, and quarterback. Dan Devine always said that Shannon could have won a Heisman at Mizzou had he stayed.
There's others but those are the main guys who've lasted awhile.

Tim Hudson needs to figure in the starting rotation.

Brad Wilkerson needs to factored in somewhere. Dude was a monster on the mound and at the plate at Florida.
