If we're trying to get rid of the "racist" image, don't we have to get rid of Ole Miss Rebels too?

Because nothing about Ole Miss Rebels appears to be overtly racist.
Because we have too much tradition to change something like that.

We've won SEC championships and National Championships as the Ole Miss Rebels. We've done neither with Col. Reb. A mascot isn't as important to our identity as our nickname is.

I'll believe that shite.

Had absolutely nothing to do with the rebel flag.
Ole Miss was given a list of obstacles that needed to be addressed before resubmitting the PBK application and the rebel flag was no where on it.
By far and away the biggest hurdle was increasing the number of volumes in the library. This was done , of course, when the J.D. Williams library was expanded prior to re-submission.

I think he's talking about the logo as much as anything. We've had the logo (or very similar) with the Ole Miss script since at least the 1940's (I have old football programs from this era that confirm it)

This is the last thing I am going to say on this topic.

This ordeal is bigger than Ole Miss sports. The University of Mississippi is a public university and part of the state government. This is a campaign by the state of Mississippi to improve the perceived image of the state to try to pull itself from being at the bottom of the barrel. If Col Reb could survive and this we would all be happy including me. But it cannot. The Black Bear mascot came to be because the ASB student body wanted a mascot and it would help revenue in marketing. The state would be fine with leaving Ole Miss athletics without an on field mascot.

Really? "Ole Miss" is what a plantation owner's wife is called. Everyone knows Rebels refers to the civil war.

The Col Reb logo has been around since like the 30 and 40s I think. The mascot didn't start til 79 I think. I mean before Col Reb on the sidelines, we had a guy in a Confederate soldier uniform. Would that float your boat better? Please tell me this bear's tactic in getting us to Atlanta, Omaha, etc.

The State Of Mississippi ? Where did you get this information? The SAME State of Mississippi that held a referendum on the state flag (to retain the confederate stars and bars), knowing it would not succeed? This is the administration at Ole Miss doing this, NOT the state of Mississippi.

I have old football programs that state the term "Ole Miss" is derived from antebellum days when the slaves referred to the mistress of the plantation as the "Ole Miss". It's supposed to denote a genteel Southern lady. The university started using the story about Miss Elma Meek of Oxford naming the yearbook "The Ole Miss" in the 1970's.

This is one of those plausible deniabilty things. Pretend you're Cam and deny you knew anything daddy Newton did so that we can keep this tradition.

Ok, then tell me whom involved with the State of Mississippi is behind this? You must have reason to believe this.

The University is an extension of the state, technically and practically.
