Newman took a step back today. He didn't play well at all.

That's an explanation I can buy. Good post.

I didn't watch Newman in high school, but he doesn't seem to take over a game. He doesn't penetrate much or work for shots. He stands around a lot and fires up 3's. Weatherspoon is a much more complete player to me.

Most of our seniors are good athletes, they're not basketball players.

I'll be honest I was fairly optimistic about this team, but I don't think a lot of people expected the defense to be this bad. It's night and day difference from last year, we just come off as lazy and ho-hum on that end, whereas we always got after it last year (we were scrappy). Teams like ours have to be scrappy and the fact they we aren't hurts.

He played Jackson public school basketball his whole life, that's all he had to do. Q was the only decent player he played in high school minus all-star games outside of the state for the most part.

That's what a high school basketball coach told me a few days ago. Newman never had to work for shots they came easy.

it'll be a couple years when we get howland's recruits in the system before we really improve

Howland's first team at NAU went 7-21, 13-16 at Pitt, and 14-19 at UCLA. That's three of his four losing seasons in his career. If we can get a game or two above .500 next year, and compete for the tourney the next would be good.

I agree. Their fanbase tries to put a spin on the talent level and that's just not the case. Sword and Ware were top 100 4*s, Ready is experienced and a serviceable point guard. Newman is a diaper dandy and Weatherspoon was the second best recruit in the state. It's not a reach to say that this team should've won 18-20 games and land an NIT bid. The Ben Howland experience is off to a very below average start

I was wondering when somebody would say this shite. Talent isn't the issue with this team, but you obviously aren't a basketball person so you wouldn't realize the problem.

Our problem is we don't have any consistent shooters but mainly, as a team, we don't have a very high basketball IQ.

This is an average type start for Howland. Everywhere he's been.

I've forgotten more about SEC basketball than you'll ever know. You also weren't good enough to play high school hoops at Grenada much less any sport. I used to make you look like a chump in youth league.

Considering that's when his sports career came to a close, it's really all I have in my arsenal.

I think part of the problem is a new system for a lot of the inexperienced players. Plus you add in the fact that basketball isn't stressed in the SEC as much as the other major conferences (although the PAC-12 has been down for awhile now) and you'll have teams with good recruits but not quite playing team-oriented. Like other posters have said, the team will gel throughout the season and they will improve. I like Howland. The guy took UCLA to three straight FF's. That's Calipari or Szeszeczski territory there. Or Bo Ryan or Roy Williams.

No idea who you are but apparently you know me. Congrats on that I guess? Internet smack talk is definitely proving your self out there.

Regardless, I don't think to take someone too seriously who uses some bullshite about forgetting more about (add in random subject) than you'll ever know.
