Penny pincher just offered a guy 4 times his salary to make him one of the highest paid coaches in the country. I'm not convinced that you know what you're talking about here.

As I said earlier, and you apparently either missed or ignored it. His hand was forced. He had to do something to save his own arse. His penny pinching was made evident when he refused to pay Anthony Grant his buyout last year when it was more than obvious that he was fricking done.

LOL - 1/2 the crap you spew here is stupid and do not reflect reality.

calling out another poster, much less your own fanbase, for something you are more than guilty for yourself is laughabl

Thanks for keeping up with my posts! Only 1/2? My wife would say you are being very generous!

I disputed theKaptain with examples. Care to dispute those examples or are we just calling names now?

So why don't you just change your title to I'm still menstruating because Bama didn't hire Bruce Pearl?

Those coaches have something in common, their strong points are recruiting. something that is negated in the NBA. Therefore your comments are even more stupid and reflect complete idiocy. Thanks for playing though.

Here is your quote:

quote:

Everything an NBA coach has to do, PLUS recruit, develop players, often times reteach fundamentals to players who were recruited as pure athletes, many times complete change offensive or defensive philosophies depending on the talent you were able to recruit, and then you have to be able to go out and promote your team, ESPECIALLY at a place like Alabama where football is king and you need someone to really push basketball to the masses.

According to you, If a college coach is successful he is already doing everything a pro coach has to do + more, to be successful. How can a successful college coach then go to the pro's and not be successful? Your logic is flawed.

I'm interested to see who he hires as assistants. that's going to be the tell-all, and I'm sure he's going to have a blank checkbook to tote around

Agreed.

That first commitment is going to be important, to see if he can get some momentum going. If you're a good enough bench coach, sometimes all it takes is drudging up a decent class to get some momentum going on the court.

Yup. He's walking into a respectable roster, and history shows teams typically play above their expectations when the 1st year guy comes in

Actually, most times, neither translates to the other well solely because of the recruiting portion. NBA coaches dont need it and its usually such a large part of college coaches skillset that not using it is a detriment to their over all ability as well. There is a certain amount of intelligent thinking inferred in my posts. Maybe I give the SECr too much credit. I remember the days when there was intelligent life here..... lol, just kidding.

Not saying he doesn't, but we have no idea. Recruiting is hard fricking work.

He's been on the AAU circuit for years. He's got the right contacts to get big players -- frick high school coaches these days.

Might get put on probation at some point if he's too aggressive, but who cares? Probation means jack shite in basketball.

I think in a way since Alabama is not king basketball it could be a good thing. Let Johnson do some work, if it doesn't go well then can him in 3 or 4 years.

Knowing a few AAU coaches because your son played and actually recruiting through those and many other AAU coaches are 2 different things. I do like what Ollie and Hoiberg have done bringing and NBA style to college basketball. if he can do the same and further develop the few relationships he has in AAU he should do well. I would give the hire a solid B+.
