This, SO MUCH this.
Basketball recruiting is dirty. Dirtier than football ever thought about being. And it takes those relationships with the dirty folks to get it done.

I agree it's a risky hire because he hasn't coached college basketball before. Has a decent level of bust potential. However, one of the main reasons why it is nevertheless an appealing and exciting hire for a lot of people is actually contained in your post:
I think the above Avery Johnson can and will do. He is a well-known person in the basketball world, is a big personality, is very comfortable in front of the camera and appears like someone who wants to be in the limelight.
Alabama basketball needs a PR makeover after the Grant years where he basically disappeared from public view except for the couple of hours a week he was on the sidelines during the season. Johnson will be able to push the brand. That COULD lead to more interest from fans and, importantly, recruits.
None of us know enough about his actual coaching ability to really judge that, but he certainly wasn't terrible in the NBA so there is some hope that he knows how to coach a basketball team.
But no doubt the excitement comes from the feeling he will be someone who can and will promote Bama basketball to the fans and recruits both of which are desperately needed. If he can hold his own developing players and coaching X's and O's than it could actually be just the hire Alabama needed at this point.

Frankly, we are lucky to get AJ.
yet he wouldnt pay the buyout last year to get rid of Grant. His hand was FORCED this year. THAT is the only reason he offered so much to try to get Marshall. He had no choice.

I did overlook Donovan. I and most everybody else would consider him great. So that makes two out of 14 considered great. Like I said he doesn't have to be great to have the type success Bama fans would appreciate. So those of you saying he isn't a great coach are probably right, but neither is the guy coaching your team.

It's certainlh an Interesting hire. I go back and forth on it being a good or bad hire. I think his NBA success or failure of irrelevant in determining how good or bad of a coCh he'll be in college.
He does bring legitimacy to the position in the eyes of kids wanting to get to the NBA, so that's a good thing when it comes to recruiting. He seems like a personable person, which is also good in recruiting, as well as being the face of the program.
The unknown is how he'll do as a college coach. There's just nothing on his resume to gauge, and as a Bama fan that is a little unsettling.

To me "great" means universally thought of as a championship caliber coach and outside coach Cal nobody in the SEC has that. He doesn't have to be great to be successful at Bama. No one at Bama expects multiple final fours. We just want a competitive team that is fun to watch that consistently makes the tournament. Bama had that under Wimp and no one is going to call Wimp a "great" coach.
That's fair.
But Gregg Marshall is a GREAT coach, so I guess this just seems very lackluster in comparison.

I give you Cal and Donovan, but Pearl is laughable. He is a good coach, but outside of one SEC regular season championship what else has he won besides one Division 2 title.

Pearl is very good. Not great, but his time was cut short due to the sanctions. I don't think he'll end up being great if he stays at AU though. JMO.
it sounds like most of yall are just looking for improvement in general. Which is reasonable. I'm sure LSU 2014 type success would suffice. Not great, but good enough to keep you interested.
