Most of us are paying more attention to spring practice.

But no doubt the excitement comes from the feeling he will be someone who can and will promote Bama basketball to the fans and recruits both of which are desperately needed. If he can hold his own developing players and coaching X's and O's than it could actually be just the hire Alabama needed at this point.

This.....X's and O's are last thing I am worried about with AJ. Being the CEO of a college program is where some pro guys trip up in the college ranks.

..but this hire has people buzzing and talking nationally about Bama basketball...the energy, excitement, publicity, is what is needed. We will be better with AJ at the helm....this hire and a 5- year plan, the program is at least moving forward and that is the most important thing.

it's just so much different in the NBA and college. Only time will tell. He never had to be an outstanding X's and O's guy in the NBA. His best season as with a loaded Dallas team.

Gay.

Hopefully you can get to a few games this year. Namely LSU. I've made the trip to Ttown the past 3 times we've played there.

People are saying he has no recruiting experience. But that's not completely true. He's very well connected on the AAU circuit. Him and his son were also vital to helping Texas A&M land the #3 recruiting class. Throw in him being the coach, with the exposure he's gotten on espn the last three years, and he's going to kill it on the recruiting trail. There's not a single basketball recruit who doesn't know Avery Johnson.

My only concern is how well can he teach fundamentals. He was an extremely fundamentally sound player. How well he can pass along that knowledge will be the biggest question mark.

But I'm thrilled. And I'm curious if the OP can list a single better potential hire. Because I can't think of a viable candidate that is a better hire.

Loaded being a realtive term baw.....look at who the Mavs had to compete with in the west: San Antonio, Lakers, Suns, etc.

it sounds like most of yall are just looking for improvement in general. Which is reasonable. I'm sure LSU 2014 type success would suffice. Not great, but good enough to keep you interested.

I'm not. I want to compete at the highest levels. I want to be FLorida a few years ago, competing championships in both football AND basketball at the same time

Sure, but he's still been a face on NBA broadcasts. A lot of high school kids will know who he is.

He also lost in the finals against the Shaq, Wade, Alonzo Mourning, Gary Payton, Antoine Walker, Jason Williams squad. They were loaded with 3/4 hall of famers.

If your not landing Marshall or Archie Miller, your taking a risk. This seems like a good risk.

I would have rather had Marshall, Barnes, OR Smart, but there was no way we were gonna even try for Smart just because we wouldnt try to get 2 VCU coaches in a row knowing how well the first one panned out. I think Smart is better than Grant, though I understand not going after him like we did Marshall.

He will bring a player-friendly system which could attract recruits. That system is "Nellie Ball", fun and gun offense with no defense. It's not championship basketball but fun to watch. AJ is a Don Nelson protégé.

My favorite stat about the hire:

5 of 7 former Nba coaches made the NCAA Tournament. 4 of those 7 made the Sweet Sixteen.

I like those odds.

More reason to try to hire TR Dunn as an assistant.

This is just a sad attempt to get the SECrant to like you.

"Hey everyone I'm not a biased bammer! I promise! No really! Seriously guys!! Guys?!? Please like me?!"

Sad...

If you wanted a legit college head coach who was vital to putting together Texas A&M's team, you should have hired Rick Stansbury.

Nellie ball went out the door with Don Nelson. Johnson brought a more defensive minded approach and more iso on offense. Completely different from Nelson.

He likes to play fast breaks, but once forced into a half court offense, he switches to iso. It's pretty balanced.
