Alabama did that in the 80's with UAB in Basketball when UAB was still building up their program under Gene Bartow. As soon as UAB beat UA they stopped agreeing to play and for a bit more than a decade they were neck and neck as far as getting to the NCAA Tournament and how far they advanced. So when there is the risk of a program that is more of a little nephew than little brother surpassing your program why would you put yourself in that position?
Get your facts straight. Alabama has NEVER scheduled UAB. They met in the NCAA tourney and UAB won. I think they have also played each other in the NIT.

The NIT LOVES to pair up regional teams that don't like to play each other.

Very true for basketball and football, but despite what George Carlin would have led you to believe, it seems as if a few BASEBALL COACHES have had the bigger balls with respect to athletics between these two schools.

The writer's research might be off based on a reader's comment in the article, but I imagine he considers Texas a conference opponent for A&M.
Texas, A&M, and Baylor were all founding members of the SWC in 1915 so that don't make sense. I think it's just a subtle Texas troll

Well when you have an entire state as a fanbase you don't need to beat up on the little brothers for easy wins to pad stats.

Up until 20 years ago we were the only D1 school in Arkansas. Godfather Frank proclaimed we would not fracture the fanbase by beating up on the little schools. It allows us to basically root for all Arkansas schools, which I and most of the state tends to do.

I rooted like a mofo for stAte to beat Tennessee hell even put money on them to beat the spread. I'll hope they give Miami hell this weekend too.

I do have to admit, the few months that Gus was there, I did root for Oregon to skull frick them and bring Gus down a peg.

We don't want to help their programs get stronger. It is also a lose-lose for Bama. If you beat them by 50, no one cares. If it is close or a loss, then someone is getting teabagged or poisoned.

LSU played an in-state school every year for around 5-6 years straight recently. I thought it was a bad idea because of the above, but it really didn't turn out to be a problem and the rent-a-win money stayed in-state.

Wow, you're clueless.

UAB and Alabama have never scheduled each other. The NIT pitted them against each other in a game in the 90's (nearly a decade after UAB basketball had peaked under Bartow). UAB won 58-56.

I see the merit in that, but I also hold the opinion that if you're going to have three weak teams to guarantee home games, I'd like for them to be teams from different regions.

Southern Miss is a game I'd like to get rid of this year. They used to be a regular opponent, and they always played tough in losing. Now, they're not only familiar, but they're just terrible. If I could, I would replace them with a Toledo, or New Mexico, or Fresno, etc.

I actually enjoyed getting to go watch teams like Colorado St., and San Jose (that I'd never seen before).

There's no good reason for Arkansas to allow a game vs. ASU to become ASU's game of the year.

Incorrect. Take November 22nd this year

Bama plays W. Carolina. South Alabama plays USCe. Assume USA is getting paid $1 mil and W. Carolina also getting paid $1 mil. Net effect on the economy is 0. If Bama pays USA $1 mil net effect on the economy is also 0

Don't kid yourself. If Bama was afraid of everyone who beat our arse in basketball, we'd never leave the house.

Playing an in state non Power 5 school does nothing for your program. Playing an out of state non Power 5 school at least gets your program discussed all week in that schools media. Local sports radio here has been discussing Miss State a lot this week because USA is playing them. Bama had an article just about every day last week in the Sun Sentinel because they were playing FAU. The question should be why are you wasting time playing in state schools

For the record, yes, I think we should play Arkansas State in the second or third game every season. Keep the money in state and it ensures that we get a school that will take their best shot at us to tune us for the season. But there are some very good reasons to do that as well.

the "keep the money in the state" argument is irrelevent because stAte gets paid by whatever school they play and we pay whatever school we play.

You wouldn't understand the dynamic. Just like I won't pretend to understand those in Texas. Even after living there for a few years.

Alabama basketball hasn't been relevant in more than a decade. That's hardly the issue here.

when Whimp was run off Bama BB went in the crapper.
As coach he wouldn't give UAB the time of day.

I wish UAB would just separate from the UA system so they would quit crawling to us every time they want money for something.
