It is true. The poll/BCS/playoff era began in 1936. Since that time, Bama has 11 titles. Notre Dame and Ohio State are tied for second with 8.

Let them claim them.

That way Vandy can also claim their 4 national titles.

In '64 an undefeated Arkansas was awarded a split national title with Alabama, who lost to a team we beat.

At this point we just have to be thankful that Bama is not claiming titles dating back to dawn of recorded history.

"Yes, the second dynasty of Egypt did not have a football championship... but if they did we would've have at least won two or three hundred championships in that era!"

Best to just nod and accept what they say before they start claiming championships before Adam and Eve.

Why put a number on it? Just say "we have won a shite-load" of titles.

We could claim '66, '45 and '77.

Your team has a solid argument for 1964, but you'll need to take that up with the AP and UPI, seeing as they chose to award us their trophies for that year and have never asked for them back. Sorry but not really sorry.

One correction. The Tide doesn't still claim it. They didn't claim many of their titles until relatively recently.

Hog fans say Bama shouldn't claim anything but AP and UPI trophies...until it doesn't fit their claim in 64.

So in this troll thread we have two lsixu trolls glancing over the fact that 90% of most Bama fans don't feel like it should be counted. Kinda messes up a terrible troll thread to be honest. Oh well cant wait until the next Troll thread started.

I have simplified it by claiming only wire service AP & UPI (I think started in 1936), BCS, and playoff titles. That gives us 11, which is more than any other team.

Dear Ashley Schaeffer,

If you can find time, please see if LSU won the 1935 basketball national championship?

Thanks,

The AP Poll signed in blood on the dotted line that they will be a component of the BCS.

Therefore BCS champion is AP champion due to contractual obligations.

Without reading the thread, but the real answer is two fold. one being sort of a catalyst

Notre Dames claiming of championships
So they could make themselves look better

It will always bug me that Bama lists 1941, because it emboldens little hater fans of opposing teams to call all of the titles into question.

The simple answer: You don't "claim" a national championship. It is awarded by the system in place. Years ago, there were several polls which awarded national championships and Houlgate was one of those. You can't deny that Alabama was awarded the national championship by Houlgate, but you can question whether a Houlgate national championship is legitimate. I have no problem with the latter.

The irony is that opposing fans LOVE to say that Alabama claims multiple national titles that aren't "real", while they themselves always seem to have a year that they WEREN'T awarded the national title by a legit poll yet they claim they won it that year (see: Arkansas 1964, auburn 2004, etc.)

So AP shows 10 since 1936, and UPI, which was United Press International (coaches poll, later USAToday), awarded one more that AP did not, so a total of 11 including the BCS and current titles.

As noted in another post, Notre Dame has 8 in that same timeframe.
