Why does Alabama claim the 1941 championship?

In 1941, the Minnesota Golden Gophers (damn that's lit) compiled an undefeated season including a big win against a #3 Michigan squad and a Big 10 championship. Because of some Better Business Bureau bullshite, the Golden Gophers couldn't do whatever gophers do at the Rose Bowl that year. *At that time no team could play the Rose Bowl in back to back years.* They were ranked #1 and selected as national champions by all but one selector.
That same year, Alabama was 9-2 and ranked #20 at the season's end. They got beat by Vandy and Miss State, didn't win the SEC, but were allowed to play Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl, winning 29-21 over the Aggies. They were ranked #20, but one selector declared them national champions, the Houlgate System, which crunched numbers and came up with their winner. The Tide, to this day, still claim this championship.
Now, I understand that back in the wild west days of NCAA college football champs could be a bit gray and there were many co-champions. However, many teams do not always claim these titles due to their obscurity.
But this situation was different. This would be like Jeff Saragin proclaiming that by his numbers, a 10-3 Rose Bowling winning USC team was the best football team this year, and USC claiming that title. Fans would say "Impossible. Ridiculous. No team should claim that hot garbage."
But Alabama does.

Because the guy who ran the Sugar Bowl (which Bama played in) declared them national champions.

Got me. We should claim '66 before we claim '41.

I don't. But it started with some dumbass information director years ago. There's plenty we could claim. But that's not one of them.

Brevity is the soul of wit.
Stop trying so hard.
Stop trying so hard.

Because someone put it in a game program for recruiting purposes or some shenanigans and it stuck.

So that you can go online and complain about it, instead of dealing with your own life.
You're welcome.

I don't and I'm bothered by the fact that it's always on the lists. If we're going to claim something, I'd rather '45, '66, or '77.

Like I understand that is total bs that they are claiming that title, I'm sure it's happened on a couple of their other titles as well.
But who cares it's was 1941

Fine. Replace 1941 with 1966.
Feel better?

Because no one cares enough to dispute it

I'd rather not, and you'll never hear me claim "16" either. I wish we would drop that one.

not aware of any bama fan that thinks we should claim it ...
it's been discussed several times here before ...

it's 1941, does it really matter?

I have simplified it by claiming only wire service AP & UPI (I think started in 1936), BCS, and playoff titles. That gives us 11, which is more than any other team.

Is that true? Thought ND would be ahead of Bama?
