Honestly, I don't know. I always felt it was obvious we had a ceiling as we are a small state, without great tradition in football, and competing with big time schools in the same area. But then you see Clemson and Mississippi suddenly becoming top 5 recruiting schools and you wonder. I do know Spurrier and the previous staff put forth less effort at recruiting than probably any other staff in the conference. We were getting 10-12 4 star players a year, but even all 4 stars aren't equal. The #40 recruit and the #265 recruit can both be 4 stars, doesn't mean they are equal. Most of our 4 star players were Georgia guys that either slipped through the cracks or were just not the top targets in their state.

I think we could be a consistent 10-15 ranked class each year with a staff committed to putting in the time recruiting. We were 16-20 consistently with a staff that spent as much time golfing as recruiting.

Spurrier stopped trying recruiting once he decided that he was going to retire in a few years so it would only affect a future coach if his recruiting was poor.

I'm not even going to say Spurrier changed as far as recruiting. Other than Lattimore, he never was overly involved with any recruiting. The big difference came when Shane Beamer left and Steve Jr. took over his responsibility as recruiting coordinator. It was either a job he wasn't really invested in, or a job he was just incompetent in doing. Either way, that's the pivot moment from our really talented teams that were as good as anyone, to our team that couldn't beat the Citadel.
