Why did S.Car hire Muschamp?

Muschamp took over for Meyer, who had won two national titles in the 5 seasons before Muschamp arrived and had finished #3 another year. Muschamp did well in year 2 mostly because of Meyer's players, even though year 1 was only 7-6. But by year 3 he ruins things so much they go 4-8 and lose to Ga. Southern. Why would any BCS program want to touch this guy?

because Plan A-F turned them down.

It was a pretty underwhelming hire, especially since they had a head start on searching for coaches.
I think he could do well at SC because they have lower expectations compared to UF. I worry about his personality. Bringing in Roper was a questionable move as well

I honestly believe they had Tom Herman until someone ran their mouth. Then I believe they were close with Smart and that's why Georgia made their decision to part ways with Richt. I think Muschamp is on a very short leash.

As a Miami fan I'd almost be willing to say that even Al Golden would have been a less bad hire than Muschamp. He had a similiar record after taking over a program in much worse shape than Muschamp did. Not sure if Golden's scuedules were any worse than Muschamp's since the SEC East was down for most of Muschamp's tenure.

Failing at UF does not automatically mean he will not do well at USC. He checked a lot of Tanner's boxes. Good recruiter, SEC guy, able to hire a good staff, etc.
Muschamp has had the opportunity to learn from his mistakes. Whether or not he learned from his mistakes at UF will be the difference in this being a good or bad hire.

His sideline personality in the Iron Bowl tells me he's matured as a leader.

Urban left him with a dumpster fire. So did Spurrier.
Maybe they liked that he had experience with dumpster fires?

Apparently Tanner talked to him extensively about this, but in the end can he change? Not sure. There's a lot of unknowns with Muschamp but if he can get his act together he can be a successful head coach here.

He put together a staff that can recruit really well. At worst, in four years you will be stacked for the next coach.

How is Kelvin Taylor gonna have eligibility to play at USC in 2020?

Because he was the best coach available at the time that fit the criteria our AD was looking for. Herman was our first target, and had we not shite the bed and lost to the Citadel making him rethink how big a rebuilding job he had ahead of him, he'd be the coach here now. Our AD thought the deal was done and was caught a bit off guard when Herman backed out. He next set after Smart, and that caused Georgia to finally pull the plug on Richt and get Smart. So the initial top 3 we had were off the board, with Virgina Tech having hired the Memphis coach.
Of the other candidates available, Muschamp was the choice that best fit our needs. He may end up being a great hire, or he may end up being a disaster, only time will tell. A few things in his pro column are that he will be a relentless worker and recruiter, which we didn't have with Spurrier. He will upgrade our defense immensely from where it was the past two years as he is a very good defensive coach and can spot talent that will fit his system. He has experience being a head coach in the SEC, so he won't be shocked or surprised by things he is required to handle as a first time coach might. Also, he didn't succeed the first time, so he has to know this is his last real chance so hopefully he will be focused and driven.
It's not like we passed up on Saban, Harbaugh, or Urban to hire Muschamp. From the way things worked out, he was our best option. Timing is everything.

One thing I wonder about how much better can sc recruiting really get? Wasn't spurrier bringing in like 10 or 12 four stars every year?
I understand the classes didn't develop as well in the later years but muschamp also had huge problems in that area esp on offense
