Why did CBS replace Sean McDonough with Verne Lundquist for college football?

Am I the only person that really liked Sean McDonough when he was calling CFB games for CBS? I thought he was way better than Verne. It was always hilarious hearing his voice go up an octave whenever he got excited. What was the reason for Lundquist replacing McDonough? It seemed like McDonough called all the big football games for CBS in the late '90s. Next thing I know, I'm watching CFB games and hearing Verne yelling "Oh Wow" every other play. Just a big downgrade there.

I've never been able to take mcdonough seriously with his voicecracks.

He sounded like a boy going through puberty when the stoernover happened.

I'm not that impressed with either one of them. Verne's best days are behind him--those were his days at Channel 8 in Dallas & doing some Dallas Cowboys' games with Frank Gleiber.

I also don't think McDonough was that great at college football. CBS needs to opt for Plan C--I wish there were some young Keith Jacksons out there.

I'm usually too into the game to notice the play by play guy. Except for that woman who does the early games. Ugh.

McDonough had perhaps my favorite call ever (other than Hawthorne) in the 1996 CWS when Morris hit the HR.

I guess I'm the only one with a soft spot for ol' Verne. It's like watching football with my grandfather.

But McDonough is solid. If I was at the helm of CBS, though, I'd try to lure Brad Nessler away from the four-letter and team him with Gary.

No, you're not. Even though Verne blows several calls per game, loses his train of thought, and basically has no clue what's going on about half the time, I think he and Gary call about the best game out there.

Remember, folks: The alternative is Brent and Herby.

Been saying it forever, sexist or not, Ron Franklin is the man. His Saturday night SEC calls were some great memories on the late 90s and early 2000s.

I'm with you there. I think the chemistry between Verne and Gary has developed nicely over time. Yes, Verne does blow some calls, but all the play-by-play announcers do that from time to time. And Danielson is arguably the most knowledgeable color guy in college football today. I know I'll get flamed for that statement, but I'll stick by it.

Franklin>>>>>everybody else.

I think a team of Franklin and Blackledge would be money.

There is no excuse for someone to blunder as much as Verne does each and every season. This has been going on for a long time. Maybe it's because "fly in the ointment" is next, or thinks he is next in line as the play by play man.

They really need to hire someone besides the both of them, and this should have been done long ago. CBS needs to go find a decent play by play man for SEC football. By far, the majority of the people and even the media will admit it out loud. It's a no brainer that Verne should go home and watch "Happy Gilmore" and enjoy himself because the speed of the game has long passed him by.

Too many sports stations have put a higher priority on Color Analysts than Play-by-Play guys.
