CBS lost the SEC. They settled for the BIG. Pretty simple.

Because the regular season is the only time they win?

You really think it means they have the most eyeballs watching CFB?
Do you not understand it's the percentage of TV's tuned in?

From what I understand, more people watch the B1G games. Why? I have no idea. But eyeballs pay the bills. I'd like to know about total eyeballs over an entire season, though, because the SEC goes all the way through the CFP, and the B1G is rarely there.

The problem is espn has no competition when they bid. Why would they pay a bunch of money for the sec now. Who else is going to bid against them
This whole myth like the sec is the only thing that matters or “nobody cares as much as we do about our team” is fricking nonsense
Iowa and Wisconsin fans care just as much about college football as arkansas and Tennessee. Just stop it. Hell Wisconsin got more viewership than texas for Crissakes last year

The Rust belt TV markets care mainly about the NFL, not so much college. Also, those markets are struggling to grow (or even shrinking slowly). That’s why the Big 10 has expanded way outside of their footprint. Of course, the northeast and Los Angeles are not where the growth is either. The southeast and southwest are where all the growth is happening.

Population and spending potential. Surely you are smart enough to know that.

Also ESPN didn't see the value in the B1G to pay more. So they stepped away.
That is not true...... ESPN offered 380M for 7 years. CBS and NBC offered 350M each for 7 years. The commissioner of the BIG10 turned down ESPN's offer.

Have you ever heard of Ohio State??

SEC royally screwed up. CBS Games are 10 times better than ESPN plus you never put all your eggs in one basket.
Are we supposed to totally discount the SEC games on ABC? Fowler and Herbie are so much better than the CBS crew. The SECCG will also be on ABC. Why don't you just relax and see what the next TV contract looks like? The idiot buckeye fan over here is just stirring the pot. What a bunch of chicken littles.

CBS is paying more ($330 million) for Tier 2 Big Ten games than ESPN is paying for Tier 1 SEC games ($300 million). The inference drawn is that CBS wasn't willing to pay more than $300 million for the SEC deal, but that probably is false. Truth is, we don't know what CBS offered for that package in 2020. The SEC didn't have to take the highest bid, and had 2 reasons for rejecting a CBS bid (not necessarily valid reasons, but they factored in):
(1) the SEC was pissed about CBS refusing to increase what it was paying for Tier 1 rights in 2012 when the conference added A&M and Missouri, and put out the word in the wake of that decision that the conference would not be re-upping with CBS when that contract expired (Clay Travis was given this information by sources at the time).
(2) By unifying all rights with one broadcaster, the SEC will be able to set game times much further in advance; something which will please fans. The 12 and 6 day selection windows have been hard on fans, and when the deal was announced with ESPN in December 2020, the SEC said one benefit of giving ESPN everything was with regard to scheduling. It remains to be seen exactly how this will play out, but that was one point that the SEC emphasized when they put all their eggs in one basket.
Was that a smart decision? I'm skeptical, but, don't believe this spin when you hear media figures trying to suggest that CBS valued Tier 2 Big Ten games more than they did Tier 1 SEC games.

But I think under that deal, since ESPN has so many other conference partners, ESPN was going to get the 3rd tier B1G game. Fox at Noon and NBC in prime time were going to get 1 and 2 or vice versa.

Excellent point and ESPN bought themselves some goodwill by renegotiating their deal with the SEC at the time.

That's BS. None of those people own a waterbed up there. Never seen one up there.
Half of my relatives own a waterbed and that includes some that live in mobile homes (double wides only). I'll call bullshite again. They ain't got that much money up there.

Over 100,000,000 Americans live in an SEC state. There are roughly 350, 000,000 Americans.

It’s about future potential and money. If that much money is invested sooner or later those areas will catch up with the SEC or surpass. That to me is the biggest reason the media pushed NIL. The conspiracy theorist part of me thinks those Yankees and west coast hippies got tired of us backwoods southerners kicking their asses.

I’m pissed Sankey only looked at dollar signs…There is a big time intangible value that having a network like CBS brings.
ABC/ESPN is the lowest of quality productions out there. They fall behind CBS, NBC, And Fox in how they produce a game.
Sankey fricked up.

This ... this is about down the road, they're playing the long game. People who focus only on championships in the here and now are never going to understand that.
And it's absolutely a gamble.
