That 2010 Auburn defense wasn't great, but they did three of the most important things you can do on defense. They stopped the run, generated a pass rush up the middle , and they got off the field on 3rd down.

Not for lack of talent, but because USCe does not have enough talent around him to protect him from double and triple teams
We have one of the best and deepest DLs in the SEC.

Unless clowney has a DT type year, then he will have been severely overhyped and nowhere near the legend status others have acquired over their career
You can forget that bru. years like that year DT had 27 sacks will never be seen again. In one year DT had more sacks than a lot of lbs have their entire 4 yr CFB career dude was insane. Easily my favorite Bama player of ALLTIME.

Fairley was the 2nd main piece in making Auburn national champions. He found a way to take the opponent's qb out of the game within the rulebooks. He won the Lombardi.
Clowney led his team in sacks and knocked a guy's helmet off on a cool play.
Clowney's stats last year would have lead the 2010 AU team as well...
And your comparing a guy two years out of HS to a fifth year senior. By the time Clowney has the same teaching/conditioning available to Fairley he will be in his second year in the NFL.

Fairley had more tackles, more TFL, 3 times more QB hurries, and more INTs. The only thing Clowney had an advantage with was sacks and FFs. And he should have, considering he's a fricking DE compared to a DT.

I think it's a lot easier to double or triple team a DE than it is to do the same to a DT. That's why I would take 2010 Fairley over 2012 or 2013 Clowney. Fairley seemed to be involved in every play, and had a knack for a huge play or turnover when AU had to have one. Also an elite DT in the SEC is much more valuable than an elite DE in the SEC, with this being a run heavy league.

Now, having said that, for Alabama's particular 3-4 and 3-3-5 scheme, Clowney would be more valuable to us as a jack LB than Fairley would as a NT or 3-4 DE. Alabama's system is designed for the LB's to make all the plays and the DL to simply clog space and take on double teams.
Bama has had some great DL like Cody and Dareus, but they put up minimal stats.

Anybody remember what Terrence Cody did to all those poor centers? Its all about that DT. Of course.....it was accompanied by copious earthquakes

What? Glen Dorsey was a better collegiate DT.

In two more games he had a 6 tackle, .5 TFL edge? The QB hurry thing is odd... Watching the Georgia game it seemed Clowney had more than 5 in that game alone. Who takes that stat anyway?

Aren't you the same guy that just made a thread bashing Alabama player's for under-performing in the NFL, and now you come in here defending Fairley's average NFL career, despite getting single teamed right next to the best DT in the NFL?
That thread was about Alabama players this thread is about an Auburn player

It's easier to double on the inside. Especially in against 3-4. In a 4-3 if the de lined up on the outside shoulder of the tackle making it easier to chip block but harder to double with a guard.

FROM THE DT POSITION.

And why does every comparison Clowney gets thrown in with so unevenly balanced. If you wanted to compare them heads up, the fair question would be 2007 Fairley vs 2012 Clowney, or even 2010 Fairley vs 2015 Clowney.

I'd have to go with Clowney. Fairly was a good DT when he wasn't getting flagged or doing cheap shots, but he's not the athlete that Clowney is. Also, Fairly just seemed to much like a tPOS that nobody wants on their team, does he even play for Detroit anymore, I can't tell?

Well he did win every major defensive award, that he could win. Dorsey was unblock-able before that chop block.
