Saban would go for 6 million. How about Gruden or Cowher?

IF Fulmer is fired, his replacement will have to be a lights out recruiter. They rely heavily on out of state talent and they have a lot of competition for it.

Why?

I've never understood that mentality. If a coach is not getting the job done (I'm not saying Fulmer isn't, but assuming UT concludes that he isn't) and shows no real promise of getting it done in the future, then it's time to get rid of him, even if you don't know who his replacement will be or how good he will be. If you are satisfied that your current coach is a known quantity with no real chance of success, then hiring someone new, even an unknown quantity, increases the chance of success.

When you hire a new coach, you have to keep him around for a while, usually 3 to 5 seasons. For example, Nebraska gave Callahan 4 seasons. Notre Dame gave Davie 5 seasons. ND gave Willingham 3 seasons. LSU gave Hallman 4 seasons.

In other words, when you hire a new coach, its a decision you are going to be stuck with for at least 3 to 5 years. If you hire and fire coaches every season, then no coach is going to want to come to your program.

Being that you are stuck with new coaches for 3-5 years, some might think it would be silly to fire Fulmer without having any idea whatsoever of who you are going to get to replace him. For example, say Tenn puts a list together of coaches they feel would have a good chance of doing better at Tenn than Fulmer. Should Tenn fire Fulmer, and then call these coaches to see if they are interested, or should Tenn put the feelers out to see if any of these coaches are interested before they fire Fulmer? I'm sure some people would find the latter route to be the safe bet (because that way, if Tenn finds that none of the coaches on their list are interested in coming to Tenn, then they can keep Fulmer around until they do find a coach that they feel good about who would like to come to Tenn).

It's not like Fulmer is Curly Hallman. Fulmer was one of the most successful coaches in college football from 1993 to 2001. During that time, Tenn was a perennial Top 10 team. However, since then, Tenn has struggled just to stay in the Top 25 half the time.

But, because of his history, he's like a Paterno or a Bobby Bowden. Even though their programs aren't as good as they were in the past, they are still solid programs that get good recruiting classes that still sporatically put together some very good seasons (like Tenn winning the East last year). For some, that's tough to risk throwing away unless you are sure you've got a really good coach willing to come take over.

Ideally, of course, Phil would want to retire, and would help in the search for his replacement, and would wait to retire until they found one that wants to come to Tenn that they all feel good about.

But if Phil wants to go the Paterno or Bobby Bowden route, I'm not sure everybody in Vol Nation is going to be happy about that.

Well, at least concerning Jon Gruden, the rumor is that he's always wanted to coach Tennessee and that he owns property in Maryville. He's a common pick when people talk about a coaching change at UT.

Cowher is wishful thinking.

If money were not an option, I would want to go after Bob Stoops. But there is no reason for him to leave OU, so that won't happen.

Bronco Mendenhall is probably my top choice, but I do not think he will leave BYU. I've heard it's his dream job.

Others I like are Dan Hawkins (CU), Gary Patterson (TCU), Brian Kelly (Cincinnati), Skip Holtz (ECU), Jim Harbaugh (Stanford), and maybe Schiano, although his stock is falling fast. Will Muschamp would also be a good pick in my opinion, although he'd bolt for Georgia the day Richt leaves (who knows when that will be).

Butch Davis is also another pipe dream name for alot of UT fans, but I don't think he's going anywhere unless it's to Arkansas.

I noticed one omission from the list. For the right amount of money, they could probably buy Saban.

Yeah, it's a rumor, but hey it might be true. I like Bronco too. I also like Harbaugh.

I don't think Hawkins would leave CU, jmo. His own kid is the QB and only a sophmore.

No, I don't think Hawkins will leave Colorado either. He really likes it there and as you said, his son is the QB. He is going to do great things for the Buffaloes.

But I still would love to see him at Tennessee. Fantastic coach.

Tennessee shouldn't have too much trouble finding a decent coach imo. You've got a name, money, and some good players already there. Why couldn't you get a Brian Kelly or Skip Holtz? Maybe even a Butch Davis, hell no one thought we'd get Saban (including me).

I'd prefer his old man. Would be a good reason to get him off the tube.

Lou Holtz hates Tennessee with a passion.

Which would only increase the hilarity if Skip were to coach here.

i think bronco mendenhall is the best coach for the job, hes done great at BYU

mike leach
he runs a gimmicky system and doesnt work against elite talent(see everytime he plays UT and OU). the reason they always win their bowl game is b/c their offense is extremely hard to prepare for if youve never played against it. thats why the OUs and UTs shut it down-- theyve seen it before and know what to do. lets also remember they are always the big12's 3rd or 4th team so they get a corresonding bowl team. not exactly BCS games they are dominating.

bottomline, leach will always be in the 7-9 win category at TT, and would probably get to the 8-10 level with SEC talent. but that system has no running game, which urban meyer has learned, makes life extremely difficult in this conference. they already have a 8-10 win coach. hes not an upgrade

Jim Grobe's (56) name gets thrown around a lot when people talk about hiring a new coach.

Before he got to WF, they were 5-6, 3-8, 7-5 (beat 6-5 Arizona State in Aloha Bowl), 2-9.

After he took over, they went 6-5, 7-6 (beat 7-5 Oregon in Seattle Bowl), 5-7, 4-7, 4-7, 11-3 (beat Louisville in Orange Bowl), 9-4 (beat UConn in Meinke Car Care Bowl). This season he is 3-0.

Before WF, he coached at Ohio, where they went 2-8-1, 6-6, 8-3, 5-6, 5-6, 7-4.

Lou Holtz is an idiot. Always bias and usually always wrong with his predictions.

Lou would probably disown is son if he went to UT

His offense was shut down by Alabama in the Cotton Bowl after the 2005 season. Their big numbers are a product of the fact that few teams play any defense in the Big XII, and Texas Tech plays nobody outside the conference. Whether his system would work in the SEC is highly questionable.

Good points, but Oklahoma has a great D, right? One on the level of SEC Ds, right?

In the last three years, Leach's Texas Tech is 2-1 vs. Stoop's Oklahoma. In the two victories, TT put up 473 yards and 376 yards on OU's D.

However, in the last three years, Leach's Texas Tech is also 0-3 vs. Mack Brown's Texas. However, in those three games, TT put up 476 yards, 518 yards, and 369 yards on the Texas D.

Every UT fan I talk to wants him or Butch Davis.

There are a few fringe idiots who are convinced Spurrier would drop everything and come to UT.
