Didn't end up playing for Arkansas but the best athlete to ever grace the field in Arkansas was this guy, Basil Shabaaz. Start at the 0:53 mark and it has a few of his highlights from 1990, Coach Glover (his coach at Pine Bluff) showed me some of the old game film and he is absolutely ridiculous. Those highlights are good but they are incomplete by a long shot.

A few points to put Basil in perspective:
- Scored 5 TDs in the state championship game against a defense that averaged giving up less than 7 points a game
- He held 5 track state records and STILL holds the 200M record
- Was HEAVILY recruited by every single powerhouse at the time (Miami, Oklahoma, etc.)
- MLB scouts came to watch his games at Pine Bluff, which gave one of his friends an opportunity to showcase his skills... Torri Hunter

Ended up signing a MLB contract because he didn't have the grades, agents talked him into it, etc.. Got hurt and never panned out in the minors. He was neck and neck with Bo Jackson on speed (judging by track PRs). Greatest athlete and football player this state has ever had.

For Tennessee, it has to be Chuck Webb. Johnny Majors said he's the only player he ever coached that could compare with Tony Dorsett. Career ending knee injury against Pacific in the 2nd game of his sophomore year, oh what might have been........

Jamal Lewis came pretty damn close to that same situation. Good thing he was able to rebound.

Majors also said if Webb wouldn't have gotten injured he would've won a heisman

A few come to mind but Blackmon #10 would be the more recent.

You can't win a Heisman at UT. Webb could have scored 50 TD's, and averaged 9ypc, and kicked field goals, and played linebacker and he still wouldn't have won the Heisman.

As good as he was for us, I gotta say Marcus Lattimore

compiled so many records for us with only 2 real seasons worth of games played.

That's unfortunate. Hopefully there is some stipulation like Henry played a couple extra games so I can still claim Hall as better.

Just looking up Hall on Wikipedia, it's simple enough to point out that he played both ways at multiple positions in the same game, so his legacy has to still be intact. This sentence alone would make him legend:

"In a contest against Houston Lutheran High School in 1953, Hall averaged 47.3 yards on 11 carries for 520 yards (the state record for nearly 25 years, currently 4th), returned a punt 82 yards, a kickoff run of 64 yards and snatched a 21 yard interception for a combined 687 total yards."

Yeah, I wasn't old enough for Cecil, but from clips I've watched and word of mouth, he is the truest definition of "best that never was". What a shame.

It's going to suck watching Dhaquille Williams at Auburn next season. He's basically an LA high school legend and was chalked up as a "best that never was". damnit

Demetris Summers. Kid just couldn't put down the weed but 150+ yards at Tennessee his freshmen year had potential.

Freddie Smith was still playing at Auburn when I was a freshman in 1979. Guy was huge and could hit like a mac truck. I remember he had a job at Burger King and I used to see him there periodically. he had the job during his playing days.

For me, it was Prince Hall. Seemed to have a ton of potential but couldn't get his shite together.
