College World Series: LSU Tigers defeat Texas Longhorns 11-4 for NCAA baseball championship

OMAHA, NEB. - LSU started the 2009 season with a No. 1 ranking, high expectations and a $36 million ballpark.

The Tigers delivered a season worthy of all that and more.

Freshman center fielder Mikie Mahtook and junior catcher Sean Ochinko had key hits in a five-run sixth inning that broke open the game as LSU won its sixth NCAA baseball title with an 11-4 victory against Texas in the College World Series finals at Rosenblatt Stadium on Wednesday night.

like to think of LSU kinda like Tiger Woods and Texas like Jack Nicklaus

Texas is Indiana basketball
LSU is UConn

Or football. LSU is Miami. Texas is Michigan

You're a fricking dumbass if you think LSU is only #7 all time in baseball programs. That's all I'm saying.

He was plenty successful at both, and I didn't mean to imply otherwise. But you've gotta love his meltdowns.

He was more successful at csf no question. It may have been bc he was older at texas but his name was made with the titans...and that's where his legacy will be known.

The last notable USC team was 1998. I believe they won the championship that year and I know they knocked LSU out of the CWS with two straight victories over the Tigers

C'mon man. Not even sure what we're arguing about. He had 3 national championships at Fullerton ('79, '84', '95) and 2 at Texas ('02 and '05), plus runner-up in '09.

One more not from SNL: Augie for your enjoyment.

FWIW, I don't think there's any question that LSU is the best program in this century.

Homer pick, but with back up.

Texas is tied with LSU @ #2 for NC's. They are #1 in each of the other most important catagories.

LSU would need some separation in the NC count to get the purist to waiver from Texas being top of the list. If anyone, it would be USC #1 all time.

congrats...you are a fan of the most successful college BB team of all time. any ounce of bravado you've achieved is negated by the fact that you are on your knees while posting on a SOUHTEASTERNCONFERENCE message board.

I'm not arguing with you. I'm just stating that he will be known for BUILDING Cal State Fullertons baseball program into the national force that it is now, and had more success there statistically. When you say augie garrido I think of him at Fullerton. It's just an opinion, but he built that program from the ground up, at texas he just continued their tradition. I believe his achievements at CSF outweigh his achievements at texas...thats all. No big deal, just a personal opinion. Also, LSU whipping his arse in the national title game while he was at texas has alot to do with my perception of him as a coach. He was a great coach, I just believe he was at his best at Fullerton.

I agree that Texas is the all-time greatest program, edging out LSU despite the result of their last CWS encounter.

It is easy to overemphasize the last head-to-head result when making these "all-time" assessments. But that kind of thinking is the product of a cognitive bias called "recency bias" -- we tend to give more weight to the most recent piece of information. For example, many a stock broker have lost their asses because they overemphasized the latest report without accounting for aggregated history.

If you look at the history, Texas is slightly better. That's no knock on LSU -- obviously LSU was the greatest program of the 1990s and changed the game substantially during that time.

There's no need to add the "w" to USC; everyone knows who we're talking about.
