LSU or Bama. UGA's D is over-rated.

Oh goodness, here we go.

Alabama may be good but no way they immediately replace all they lost. Absurb for bama fans to be so unrealistic. No way Babama has 2 all-american LB's this year. That is a lot to replace.

People said the same thing after 2009, and I am pretty sure we finished #1 in most defensive categories in 2010.

Run defense - Edge Bama
Pass defense - Edge Lsu

Total and scoring defense - ??? until we see how newcomers on both d's perform.

I'll take Bama. Both LSU and Bama are loaded with talent, deep too. I like Bama's size and discipline. I like LSU's takeaway ability and attitude. Their secondary showed holes in January and that seems to be typical of Chavis defense, going back to Tennessee days.

Really I would have to say 1A and 1B - both are very very good.

In 2010 Bama was 5th in scoring D, 7th in yards per game, 13th in pass yards allowed, 20th in Rush Yards allowed, and 3rd in INTs. Alabama could very well have the more talented D, but to say their won't be a dropoff, especially earlier in the season, is just homerism. Without a doubt they'll have a top 10 defense next year, but LSU, in all likeliness, will have the better D this year.

EDIT: Here's the source. It is notable that South Alabama and UMass are on these lists, and if you feel like taking them out Bama moves to 6th in yards, 11th in passing yards, and 19th in rushjng yards. So regardless of their inclusion/exclusion Bama only finishes top 5 in two categories and top 10 in 3.

We'll have a top three defense. We had a top 10 defense in 2010 when we weren't as stacked as we are now, and we didn't have the experience that we have now.

If we're going to drop off, why won't LSU? I'm not saying LSU won't be better because we don't know, but to think they won't drop off too is odd.

Since I'm not stupid, I'm going to say nothing's changed until it changes.

2011

2010

2009

2008

Links are Total defense. Scoring defense is the same, except Bama was bumped to 2nd in 2008 by UF.

I believe we have led in Rush D in all of those seasons too, right? (I could always just check)

As stated 2010 was a down year for our defense after replacing a whole bunch of starters. Here is how the defense ranked in the SEC:

#1 Scoring Defense (#3 nationally)
#1 Total Defense (#5 nationally)
#1 Pass Efficiencey Defense
#1 Interceptions
#2 Run Defense
#3 Pass Defense
#1 Turnover Margin

LINK

Based on what we have coming back in '12 compared to what we had coming back in '10, I expect the '12 defense to be better than '10 and be the top defense in the SEC once again.

Oh man, you do mean he'd be wrong about being the top defense, don't you? I can understand how LSU is going to be the best in your eyes, but c'mon now.

My post wasn't meant to be directed at you. You were just the last one to post when I replied. Why doesn't this forum have a general "reply" button at the bottom of the page?

But anyway, my point is, those of you LSU fans saying that this years Bama defense will be like 2010 need to realize we led the SEC that year too.

Not saying they won't, but i don't think they'll drop off as much. Quite simply, more starters coming back. And before somebody says "Player X played in nickel packages!" your defense, most likely, will not be in nickel the entire game, they don't have as experience coming back as guys who started in all packages, playing an entire game is more physically strenuous, and to act as if Bama is the only team that rotates guys in for subbing or different packages is erroneous.

Mosley and Milliner didn't just play in Nickel though. Mosley shared his job with Nico, and he and Milliner played just as many snaps as Menzie/Dre and Nico. It'd be crazy NOT to count them.

And compare the two defenses numbers. Even if we drop off and they have a smaller drop off, we'll still be better by all means. Unless you think Bama is going to give up like 280 YPG, which won't happen.
